It might be a fair comparison to say this was just Israel's 911. I heard a pundit putting forth the theory that their internal protests recently put the country in a vulnerable postion that Hamas took advantage of.

I'm guessing they will pull together much like we did and exact a terrible vengance.

I would say that the Yom Kippur War in October 1973 was Israel's 911. This is a 50th anniversary 911 if anything.

You could make the argument that the US's first 911 occurred on December 7th, 1941.

There's "terrible resolve" on both sides. Until this basic fact is appreciated and a new strategy adopted we'll see this sort of thing continuing for another 1,000 years.

The current strategy is akin to finding a giant wasp nest and killing a few of them with the belief that the rest will get the message and magically turn into honey bees.

Don't mess with Israel. But they still do and they keep trying. Eventually losing everything.

It's almost unbelievable what is being discovered as they find more bodies in Israel. Women, children butchered, a baby shot in the head, rape and hostages from infants to a 90 year old. The irony that at a 'peace music festival' there were close to 300 killed and hundreds wounded is sickening.

I watched a news report today that said 12 years ago Israel swapped over 1000 prisoners for one captured soldier. I get the impression they are not in a swapping mood right now.

It's madness.

The thing is I'm personally over funding everyone elses wars. Not because I don't want peace in the middle east, ukrain, or wherever. The media has tarnished its reputation so bad over the past few years I just can't in good consciousness support one side or the other. I just can't determine fact from fiction from the middle of the corn fields.

Anyway, the IDF is not a group I want to be on the bad side of. I just hope they are buying the munitions the US is sending over. We simply can't fund a new war every year. It's like a life raft. Eventually you take on one person too many and the whole thing sinks and everyone dies.

At least two of us know about it. For those who do ot, the USS Liberty was an intelligence ship monitoring the 67 war (or 71, doesn't matter). It was under Israeli attack for 3 days, air and torpedo boats. Many sailors killed. Large battle flag show as well as comms. Was covered up for years and no apologies.

With friends like that who needs enemies?

I was treated well by the Jewish community as a kid. My complaint is not with Jews, but with Israel.

To add fuel to the fire:

Mass reprisals
collective punishment
confiscation of land and property of a defined class of people for the benefit of another class
sealing off all services for a population in a confined area

In the 1980s I worked with a Foreign Service Officer who worked in Asia. We were discussing the rise of the Taliban. She told me the US was going to have a real problem grappling with a political movt wrapped in religion. This still applies today to the "religious" right, Taliban and Israel.
