I have some unopened bottles of 85 to 140w gear oil. Would it be OK to use that in my snowblower that calls for 80 to 90w? It says it's good for severe Temps. Not trying to stir @#$%, just asking for my own knowledge. Thanks.

85w-140 may be good for severe heat, as it's got a higher visciosity at operating temp than 85w-90 oil.
So I wouldn't use it in winter temperatures below freezing, like for your snowblower. If it was for a rototiller running in the south of the USA, I'd put 85w-140 gear oil in the gearbox!

Thanks, the 85-140 was here when I bought the property so I figured it was worth the question. I'll get the 80-90.

It’ll do just fine…. the 85 is the viscosity for cold wx…and the 140 is in hot wx…. The difference between 80 and 85 is unimportant. Use it.

I wouldn't use it. What are you going to save $15 for the correct gear oil? There is more to the label requirement than just the weight of the oil. This is the label that is on the back of the snowblower that I have. Do you see those words "EXTREME PRESSURE OIL"? The label tells you what to use. Use the wrong gear oil, and you run the risk of ruining a very expensive gearbox.
