What will happen if you run a 540 PTO speed rated implement at 748rpm PTO speed?
Was having a conversation with a guy yesterday about small tractors and this topic came up. I've never done it personally but "a friend of his, does it all the time with his tiller and gets great results".

Anyone have any first hand experience with that PTO speed?

I don't think you can get 748 from a tractor with only a 540 PTO. In other words the tractor will top out before you hit 748 PTO. That is unless you have a 2 speed PTO.

You can run implements at a faster speed, but you have a much greater risk of doing damage to the implement and maybe even the tractor.
If an implement is chain driven, you could very easily spin the chain right off the sprockets at the higher speed.
If the implement is gear box driven you risk overheating the gears or bearings.

On the other side of things, if you have a low HP demand implement and run it at the higher PTO gear speed but pull the throttle back so that the PTO is only spinning at 540 or so you will save some fuel.

New tractors are doing exactly that, they are running a 2 speed PTO 540/540E. With it in the 540 you run the tractor at the higher engine rpm mark (RPM mark will vary per make and model) and in 540E (E= Economy) you run it in a lower engine rpm mark, both produce the same PTO speed just a differnt HP potential.

I have a 748 position on my PTO lever (540 is up and 748 is down). However the lever position to access the 748 side, is blocked by a small piece of steel, which looks to be factory, or atleast dealer installed. To try and use it, i would have to remove that block, which would be easy enough.

I don't think i'll ever try it i was just curious.
At one point, were there smaller cat1 sized 748rpm PTO implements? I can't recall ever seeing any
