First...I am new to tractors.... My brother in law who recently passed away, used a Kubota 7100 4WD, and a Woods RM59 to mow their lawn.

Now the question..the Woods mower deck wants to see 540 RPM and the low range of the 7100 PTO is around 500 RPM... I assume the PTO speed varies with engine RPM ? How do you ensure you are not exceeding the 540 RPM limit of the mower deck.

I am taking care of their yard for my sister, and this is the only item I am not clear on.

So far we have not found the owners manual, but Im sure we will... He really liked his Kubota tractor.

Any words of wisdom would be GREATLY appreciated.

Low range on the PTO is around 540 RPM. I have a B6100 and mine which like yours has a 3 speed PTO and in first gear it does fine at 540. It could be a issue that your RPM gage on the dash is out of adjustment. They get that way alot with tractors of this age.

I think the engine needs to be revved up to 2700 RPM or so to achieve the 540 RPM on the PTO. I would just go full throttle and then back it off just a little.

I'm missing the luxury of a tachometer on my tractor. I think it was an option to install one at the time of the purchase new. Theres a hole in the dash where one would go and has a rubber cover. So I listen to the tractor RPM's and judge it that way and so far I've been lucky.

WE8R,

I am not familiar with your 7100, but if it has a tach; run the engine at the PTO mark on it, with your PTO in low. This will be close enough to 540 RPMS for the mower to work. Tractors are designed to run for hours at the governed PTO speed.

Run the tractor in whatever gear gives you a ground speed that you are not overloading the mower, but you are not creeping along. You should get a nice even cut, if not check the belt tension and if the blades need sharpened.

With My L175 and Woods L59-K17, (a belly mower) I am supposed to run it at 1000 RPM's. Fourth gear is a little slow, but Fifth is just a bit too fast to dodge trees in my yard. Consequently, I either mow in fourth, or idle the engine just a bit slower in fifth; depending on if the grass is dry and how high it is.

You can go to the Woods website and download a .pdf manual for your mower.

Hope this helps,

Robert

Thanks for all of the replys !

I was running the tractor at full throtle and the mower deck sounded like it was about to lift off the ground.

Now, at least I know I can't run it wide open. :)

I have copies of the operators manuals for the b series tractors. Let me know if you want the supplier for them.

I have a B7100. It has a mid mount rc60 (60 inch) deck. I run it about 3/4 throttle if this helps.handy

I run a Woods LM59 on my B7100. As others have said, you will not exceed 540 RPM in lowest PTO speed (that speed is 514 RPM at full 2800 RPM engine speed). Just be sure not to use the mid or high PTO speeds.

I find the mower to cut nicely in most grass using the 1st gear in high range. If you get into heavy grass, use 3rd gear in low range and it will cut through most anything you want to cut with a finish mower.

Do you have front weights on the tractor? Mine was too light for most implements until I added weight, and I actually modified the front bracket so I could hang two more 55# plates (it normally accepts three).

Good luck!
