I have a Kubota 5740 and the front differential is out of it. is this something I could repair myself in the shop or should I just take it somewhere to get repaired. and if this is something I could do what does it take and are there any manuals I could buy to tell me how to do it step by step?

5740 is a big fella, and I don't know specifics of it, but that's going to depend on what "out of it" means. It's likely similar to most other such things in that there will be several splined couplers along a shaft driving the front axle pinion. Seems like those splines are often the problem, and if so that might be something you could do yourself. But at each end those splines are on shafts (axle pinion and transfer output) that are quite a job to replace, particularly on something that size. And given that you ask the question, it's likely a safe bet that anything inside the front axle is going to be a "take it to be repaired". Not knowing that tractor, it could also be an actuator issue of some sort. If you do work yourself, there are workshop manuals available, and that's where specifics are found.

Hopefully someone with more specific knowledge will be along before long.

If you have mechanical experience, good tools, and a good shop space then I don't see why not.
You will need the WSM for the tractor to get all the procedures for repair and setup.
I would also get the parts manual, good for layout of parts and what is needed to replace.

I can't say for sure, but all the manuals that I've downloaded form these guys have been good, and they are a heck of a lot cheaper than the printed version.

The printed WSM is P/N 9Y111-03692 @ $113.28

The printed parts manual P/N 97898-24730 @ $48.35

While your at it if you don't have the OPS manual go to Kubotabooks.com and download it too.
