50Hr service-BX2380-which manual is right?

BX2380....going to do my 50hr service soon, although I am <ahem> a 'little' over those hours ;-)

re: transmission fluid (hydraulic)

Operators manual says to change it:

Just got the WSM for this a couple hours ago. No mention of changing it until I reach 400hrs (sigh)

Which is it? ;-)

I went with the OP manual. Even if the WSM is "right," it never hurts to change oil early. FWIW, I also cleaned the hydraulic strainer at 50 hours. Mine was covered in bits of some type of sealant. Every new car or truck I've ever owned has had its first oil change at 1000 miles.

Good luck cleaning the transmission strainer without changing the fluid.

For me, that would be three 5 gal pails of SUDT-2 @ $137.xx ea.(Messicks) + tax and filters ($300)......a total of $740+?
That $ amount for a premature hyd. fluid change certainly "hurts" in my world.

Same here. An 'early' (?) fluid change can't hurt (except for your wallet), and might help prevent a future problem. The strainer on mine was clean at 59 hours.

i agree with Kurtee, once you remove the strainer its an open path for all SUDT2 to drain out. On my BX1870, the strainer was clean/spotless at 50 hours and at 400 hours.

$142.00 CDN (wow!)

I think I'll just go ahead and change it.

My WSM ([ssued 4, 2017a) shows transmission oil to be changed at 50 hours, with the filter changed and the screen cleaned. (Section 2, page 15)

The WSM also says (Section 2, page 25) "Do not operate the tractor immediately after changing the transmission fluid. Run the engine at medium speed for a few minutes to prevent damage to the transmission."

THank you Jim ! I just got a WSM last night and don't have it with me (I'm on the road, for work) but will see if I have anything like that in mine. Sounds like sound advice.

I had wondered about the whole "jacking up the wheels" and all that. Seemed a bit like overkill to me ;-)

On my BX1870, I just start it up on level ground and let it idle for several minutes checking for leaks before shutting her down and check full levels.

Yeah, I think. I ain't in your world and neither is the OP. I wasn't talking about hurting your pocketbook.

Just as a point of interest, when I changed the fluids on the BXs, I backed the rear wheels up on car ramps, then used the floor jack to put stands under the front. Makes access easier.

Do what you feel comfortable with, change it to 50 hours or 400 hours, or you could go to whatever hours that you want. Just consider this, machines used in commercial use can rack up 50 hours in a little more than a week, and 400 hours in a couple of months. Do you think that commercial operators do the changes as frequently as Kubota suggests in their manuals?

I ended up doing the "50hr service" at 70hrs. (oh, the shame!!!)
My BIL, who's been a mechanic for 50+ yrs has a very similar sized different brand of orange tractor with approaching 200hrs on it and he's "starting to think" about doing all the fluids.
Other than the few bits of white sealant I found, the Hydraulic fluid "looked" good.

Of course, the engine oil looked old enough to have come from the Titanic, but "they all do that" LOL

I didn't need to jack it up for clearance, but it was a little tight here and there--mostly due to my small garage and leaving the quick hitch and other stuff on the tractor. I also did NOT have the FEL mounted, which I think made things a little easier for engine oil.

I am very glad I had recently bought "oil filter pliers" as all my dedicated oil filter wrenches were the wrong size/shape. They(filters) were both stuck on there like snot to a screen door. I put mine on as hard as I could with slippery hands, then snugged them up another 1/2 turn with the pliers. No leaks after 4hrs use.

I believe the new oil filters are painted while on the machine? That would make them seem pretty tight.
