I just hit 50.0 hours on my BX2380 so I need to do a service now. At the very same time the tach stopped working and the battery light went on. Is this some kind of service reminder or just some weird coincidence?

I don't think it's a service reminder. I believe the timing is more of a coincidence. You have an electrical issue which could be a tractor problem or it could be rodent related.

On the BX2380 model, the tach gets its rpm signal from the inside of the alternator.

As Lugbolt suggested, check the wires on the side of the alternator after verifying the fanbelt.

It was indeed the fan belt. I'm no mechanic but when pointed in the right direction I can generally get it done. Thanks all three of you for your help!
