4wd kubota doesn't 4wd anymore. I dont know what to ask!

This came off my kubota some time ago. Simultaneously the 4wd didn't 4wd anymore.
Need to double-check but think it's a b6100, hst, 4wd.
According to what I found in a wsm it is the ujoint for the front wheel drive, which makes sense.
Problem is, I need to fix it and have limited experience.
My dad gave me the tractor years ago and when this happened he said I'd likely need to separate the tractor to fix it. He's passed away and I'm wanting to fix this but not sure exactly where to even start. I have access to his shop and tools, and will do it myself. He swore it was "easy" but he was the type who built a remote control lawn mower for fun.

I've done little mechanic-y jobs out of necessity, never desire. However, I can swear proficiently so i hope that can get me by.

1. Is separating the tractor necessary? I'm worried about shrapnel floating around from whatever caused this, so maybe should separate it?
2. If I'm fixing this, anything else I should be looking at? Like, if you had the time, what all would you do? Kind "in for a penny, in for a pound" ideas.
3. The tractor is awesome in every other regard, and still handy in 2wd. It does leak hydraulic fluid now like it's a dang full time job. So, that's on the list.

Not looking to restore the tractor, just fix the basics so my father doesn't haunt me from his grave about this.

I don't know your tractor, but that looks like it's probably a drive shaft going to the front. If the departure of the existing driveshaft didn't damage anything but itself, it's probably an easy fix.

It it did damage something, I have no idea how much work it will be.

Time to get down under and take a gander at it. I"ll bet you'll see where it came from.

Using the information you provided, I looked up the front driveshaft. It looks quite easy to replace. If you have all the old parts, you might even be able to take them to a driveline shop and get new parts less expensively than from Kubota. Do a google search for driveline ship or Spicer dealer in your local area. Here is the page from Messicks dot com website. DRIVE SHAFT

I'll go along with Rusty. You can probably replace the damaged yoke on the shaft. A driveshaft shop will probably have manuals and be able to order the correct part. You could have them replace both U joints at the same time then it's likely a matter of reassembly. No, you shouldn't have to split the tractor.

You need to get under the tractor and look up at the output shaft on the front of the transmission. See if it is as worn as the spline in the old yoke is. It probably is, which means the tractor has to be separated and the transmission partly disassembled to replace the damaged shaft.

I have a B7200 that just did something similar. The transmission shaft on it sheared at the hole for the roll pin.....

looking at the pictures, there's a lot of 'ugly' wear on the end of the Ujoint splines. Looking at the Messicks diagram, the lower driveshaft ujoint isn't pinned,so allowed to slide ? If so,the failure could have been caused by lack of oil on the splines, making the ujoint stick, causing stress and break ?? There's a 'tube' that covers the driveshaft(to keep dirt/water out ?? ) but also prevents easy regular maintenance.

If what I'm thinking is ,or can be, the cause of failure , I bet a lot of us should crawl under our tractors real soon to confirm stuff slides as it should.

The more immediate question is where is the front driveshaft and tube. The trasmission end is pinned and can't fall out UNTIL it catches and breaks something .....

Looking at the drawing @DustyRusty 's link had, and the info about the splined shaft @whitetiger mentioned, those are your beginning checks.

How did you get the yoke off? Did you knock out the roll pins that hold the yoke to the shaft OR did everything fail and the yoke was spinning around? Got to check the shaft ends. Which end of the shaft did this one come from - front or back?

Although it is a pain, the 4WD shaft on my L35 (also in a tube) slides in and out of the ends (I don't have yokes) once the roll pins are removed. Thats how I get the shaft out without removing front axle or anything else. I wonder if your tractor is designed the same way.

Maybe send us some pics of what it looks like under there. The shaft, the spines, etc. I have a gravel floor which is horrible so I lay down a sheet of plywood to lay on. Just sayin' :D

Thats weird damage on the yoke ends - like it's been hitting something else very hard. I guess not spinning properly and possibly flopping around - any other damage? Both yokes compromised?

If the shaft's spines are severely damaged, maybe all you need are yokes and a shaft (replace the universals too). If so you can check for used from

Take a couple pictures under the center just behind the pedals, and from the front axle back.
Also show the other side of the yoke, the side with the roll pin that's still in it.
If it snapped the front of the output shaft off it's going to be a split for sure!
