I pulled a bonehead move recently. I drove my L3830 in 4wd in high gear. Didn't do it on purpose, just getting old and forgetful.

I removed the shaft that runs between the oil pan and found the shaft running back to the trans was broken off just behind the sleeve for the short shaft. My question is: can you replace this shaft without cracking the motor/trans apart? Is the a release for this shaft back where I can get to it from the bottom side at the rear?

I don't know about your tractor but on the l235dt. there is a sleeve with internal splines that slides over the stub from the trans and over the driveshift. There should be a roll pin or 2 snap rings that hold that sleeve still. Remove those and the sleeve will slide one way or the other and the driveshaft will come out.

No need to split tractor to replace shaft.

Of all that could have broke, that is the easiest part to replace.

Not sure if I was clear based on the replies. I removed the thin metal tube sleeve by removing the two phillips head screws. I them removed the two roll pins in the two inches sleeves that hold the short shaft that is between the oil pans and removed the shaft. The shaft that is in the transmission housing is broken there it slides in the sleeve that attaches it to short shaft that's between the oil pan.

How do you replace the shaft that is in the trans housing? Is it held in by a pin or something in the back of the trans?

OK, I thought your drive shaft was broken. Is there a plate, or housing that is bolted to trans were shaft hooks up?

On our L3750 it looks like the power-take-off unbolts to expose the small shaft you are referring to.
