I have been looking for a 4 foot rotary cutter for my B7200 and one popped up on Craigslist. The price was $875 for about a month or so which I thought was very expensive. I looked today and the price was lowered to $675. It looks like it only has light surface rust and looks to be in good shape. $675 seems a bit high too, thoughts?

Thanks,
Nate

That's not a bad price if it's in good shape. 4ft attachments seem to be the hardest to find, I'm looking as well but they don't come around that often. When they do, the ones I find are in rough shape and they still want a lot of money for them. I usually try to buy at 1/2 price from new if it's in good shape, but it seems most people store their equipment outside which I'm not a big fan of. I've looked at a few and the owners say... I always had a tarp over it.... They don't realize it's sitting on moist ground and the tarp gives it the greenhouse effect....

I agree, 4ft implements are tougher to find, and usually cost a premium. I grabbed my Deere 413 for $500.

$400 to $500 seemed more reasonable to me. I did not know the smaller cutters were in higher demand.

Judging by that photo I would shoot really low. It doesn't look like it was taken care of very well. Some questions to ask the seller and yourself...
How much can you get a new one for?
How much life does this one have left?
Why is the seller getting rid of it?
If it looks rough on the outside... Did the seller check the gear oil or ever change it?

I would also find a service manual for it, bring some tools with you, and check the gear oil level. Take a sample with a small clean staw, if its dirty or looks milky I would walk away. Getting a great deal on something is always good untill you find out that it's actually junk. ;)

For me I'd jump on that bush hog for $675. Around my neck of the woods, either a 4' or 5' being sold for anything less then $600 are basiclly worth scrap metal. They've beaten to death and abused hard. Deck is bent all to crap and over all not safe to use.

Bush hogs don't have many wear points, biggest thing to look for is no rust holes in the deck, unless you have the means to patch weld some holes. You don't need a rock flying at you and hitting you in the noggin.

A new pto gear box can be purchased at Agri-supply for about $150.

I see most of them new $1000 - $1200 for a good one. At $675 if the gears go and you have to replace it, now your talking $825-$900 invested. Your better off going new at that price. If the deck is solid and he got it for $300 and rebuilt it he is only in it for less than $500, that's a fair deal in my eyes. In my opinion anymore than that into it I don't think would be worth it judging from that one photo. If you can wait long enough like new condition units pop up for around $800 that I've seen, of course it all depends on where you live and what comes available.

It takes alot for the gears inside a gear box to get trashed. I dare say you'd be good to go on that particular hog. Even if you get liquid peanut butter out the drain plug, flush it with gear oil and add some new to it..

He lowered his price to $550 in his CL ad. I told him I was thinking closer to $400 or $450, he understood. I see it still advertised so I don't think it sold yet. We will see how it goes.
