Since the pto shaft needs to be pulled into the two halves to clean and grease, it is an ideal time to check how much overlap you now have and, if the over lap is considerably more than 6", I would cut it.

You are getting a warning when the pto has to be connected and then the tractor backed into position. Right now you are being saved by the vertical top link which probably moves to horizontal when the mower is raised thus minimizing the length change.

I am going to make an educated guess that the mower deck does not lift very high off the ground. Some day you are going to chain the vertical top link so it stays vertical so you can lift the mower higher for service and then break your tractor as the pto shaft becomes too long, bottoms out and ......

Shortening the shaft is easy to do. Lots of youtube videos on the topic. All you need is a hacksaw and good blade.

Thanks Dave. I didn't think to check how far the top link swivels when I raise the deck. I plan on taking the shaft apart this weekend. Like you said, shortening it with a hacksaw should be easy enough to do and well worth the effort. Thanks again.
