What an interesting argument...er...discussion this has turned into. Apparently everyone has an opinion on filters as they do about oil itself.

Speaking of opinions:

Cut a filter open- you can tell quality by the amount of media and its condition. If you don't see any dirt or metal it means it's still in your oil.

Does it have a bypass valve and anti drainback valve? Even if it does, the valve may open at a different pressure than the engine, transmission or whatever may be designed to handle. Yet another reason to go with original equipment parts.

If you wanna be safe, use what they call for. If you want to do better than that, become an engineer and design your own.

That was somewhat true in the PAST.
It's 2011, today all you need is to KNOW what you are looking for, AND Where to look for it...
Those two things will get you everything you need to "do better"... :)KennyV
Agreed. Most don't really want to do better because the old way has worked for 30 yrs or dad used it so I will to.

Sorry dude but you cannot tell Quality by the amount of media when you don't even know what it is. As far as dirt and metal a paper towel will filter some.
