Well here I am in Fla and Irma is bearing down on us. Wrong time to ask about these but I didn't even know they existed. Can anyone recommend a good 15 or 20 KW generator for my L 38 Kubota?

What is your PTO HP?
I've got a 40kw rated 80kw surge. Dayton brand made by Generac.

here is one:

here is another :

the cost of that generator is gonna be a bit more than the same wattage of a stand alone - typically!~

15K is a good bit of juice too. You will need to run that L at a pretty good clip to power something that big, and run it long.

On the bad side of the pto-genny - you have no tractor left to use, if it is supplying power to the house!;):)

This is what I want to do as well, I have a 12.5k Generac that runs the whole house but if it has a problem its a bear to diagnose, Going with a pto generator makes sense,I would run it 4 to 6 hours at a time to cool down the house and freezers then switch to a smaller portable to maintain lighting and small appliances. If I can sell my 12.5 the money should even the cost out.

I have a 10K IMD with AVR regulation (power on older genset was dirty & some electronics would not operate). Puts out about 50 amps & will run the well, water heater, some lights & fridge, but not heat pump for air conditioning. Secret is to to portion load to needs at moment. Run well, heat water, flush toilets, then shut off, then run fridge, freezers, etc to keep food. As you said only run for a few hours then shut down, tractor is then free to handle chores around house. I use a quick hitch & transfer cable so hookup is quick & easy. Uncomfortable, yes but better than the alternative of losing everything. Also diesel is safer to store than gasoline.

I have 13,000 surge 12,000 constant from Northern Tool. North star I think. It is capable of 50amps. Here is how you find amps they are capable of 12,000 watts divided by 240 volts=50amps. It requires 24 pto. do you have a L3800? If so it is 30pto. As a general rule it takes 2hp per 1,000 watts. Only ones I have heard bad things about is the Harbor Freight generators. I have been told they are wound with cooper coated aluminum.

I have a 10kw stand alone generator in a shed that plugs into my whole house. When my power is out, chances are I'm using my tractor, or I can't get my tractor to where my electrical box is.

If you go PTO, be prepared to have your tractor tied up for hours on end, and you won't want it running at night. I bought my stand alone so I would be able to run it overnight and not tie up my tractor. We're in the snow belt, though, so getting my tractor over to my electrical box if there is a loss of power is not always possible.

We're still on generator from hurricane Irma. After the hurricane I was able to use my tractor and chainsaw to help three of our neighbors clear their driveways so they could get out. Nice not to have to choose between electricity and helping neighbors (or running water for that matter).

It's really a personal choice, and the amount of disposable cash you have.
As an electrician, and a tractor owner, I would recommend a stand alone genset, fully wired in permanently to the house/shed supply.
For the house, when there are power problems, "especially if you aren't there", your kids, wife or neighbor can get the power going, they just walk up to the control board, read the step by step instructions you have typed and laminated, flick a couple of switches, turn the key and they have power to the whole house/shed, and you can have it all day and night long if you need it.
And yes it can be a nice quiet/silenced diesel generator, or a petrol or gas unit.
Then you aren't tying up the tractor from a job you may need it for and there's no stuffing around getting the tractor out, hooking up 3 pt, running leads, mucking with fuel to keep it running.
Alternatively a standalone genset on wheels, that gets wheeled out, plugged into an inlet socket at the house/shed and away you go. This can allow you to pick the genset up on a carry all with a tractor and take it out to use it on your property if need be.
For me I'd rather have a genset on a carry all, than a PTO run unit any day, and in front of that is a permanently wired unit, plus something portable as well.
YMMV

Carl we just got electric back here in parts of avon park. I was thinkimg too of a generac system from Longs but running LP is expensive as all get out,and extended run periods means LP gas wont be available anyhow.

I have a Generac whole home, it runs off a 250 lb propane tank. I was out for 10 days in the winter and it never ran out. I highly recommend the automatic ones. Myself i'm a lineman so when the powers out I cant be home to help my family so its one less worry I have. Power goes out it automatically turns on and switches over. Anyways my prayers for the victims of Irma. I hope everyone is staying calm, I know my father traveled there to restore power all the way from Canada.

I have a Winco P11PTOS. It is an 11k with 14k surge potential. It just got us through 2 1/2 days after Irma. I have it wired in through a transfer switch, so no troubles with the repair guys out there! It powers the A/C, well pumps, fridges/freezers, and lights with no issues.

Like others have said, it ties the tractor up when you need to use it for storm clean up. I rotated on and off between generator duties and brush/tree clean up. Not overly problematic, but annoying at times.

We're in the process of purchasing a Generac whole house system. Power goes out, generator comes on automatically!

Remember that Generators run at a constant speed all the time so a PTO generator will make you run your tractor at 85%-90% throttle the whole time.
Isn't that what a diesel engine prefers... to be kept at Peak power range?

Why would you want to tie up your tractor with a PTO generator vs a stand alone? I have a stand alone 9kw generator and lots of trees, so having my tractor free to work as a tractor with downed trees, snow etc removal that probably caused my power outage is important.

My point is.....I don't want any of my tractors running at 85-90% speed for days or weeks. After Hurricane Ike we went for 10 days without electricity. I have a dedicated 27KW unit for my house, barns and water wells. Also, We were using the tractors in the field and at the neighbor's clearing trees off the road and limbs broken by the wind.

Utopia Te4xas is right. I have had both the PTE type and stand alone. The PTO is damn loud and fuel used is now running two machines. I decided to sell tractor, Pto generator and go with stand alone.
