As a family, we enjoy the summer Olympics.

Mostly the Track and Field events.

Our twin daughters were NCAA Division 1 sprinters in college, albeit several years ago now.

They both were in the NCAA Championships in Oregon a couple times.

While they weren't of the caliber to run in the Olympics, many of their former teammates and acquittances have competed, and several are in the current games.

Many have competed for USA, but others for Spain, Great Britian, Canada, and Jamaica, among others.

Brings it closer to home.

EDIT: Gabby Thomas just won Gold in the 200m.

One of the girls ran against her one year in the Ivy League.

Hometown boy took silver in pole vault. I worked with an ex-college pole vaulter, wood pole era in high school and, I think, college.

Jay - - - I don't know much about the Siene River or those events, but I wondered the same about "treating" the river in downtown Paris.

I think downtown Paris isn't known to be the most sanitary environs....isn't there "open toilets" right on the riverbanks?

Lord only Knows what's happening upstream....

Our local river is actually cleaner than it was 50 years ago due to urban sewage treatment systems/plants, including segregation of waste and stormwater infrastructure.

Not sure the same applies in a 700 year old metropolitan area.

I saw a program on how London was cleaning up the Thames about a month ago made me wonder WHY France didn't do the same to the seine, though maybe frenchies aren't sane.....

I did a lot of sports when I was in school. But, I'll be honest-I couldn't compete. These folks could use different substances for workouts and bulking up, etc--I refused to, and obviously was no good, at least not as good as they were.

I moved on to other sports; drag racing.

anyway, I'm glad to see the olympics doing what they're supposed to, helps us all realize that no matter our race, nationality, etc-we can all work together for the good.

my neighbor is a silver medalist in the 2018. But there is some back story to that whole ordeal, which I don't need to go into. She works her tail off!

Just for fun……
USA makes some fast runners I tell ya…..but us Canucks makes some pretty darn good hammer throwers EH! 🪒🪒
Canada has some pretty good MMA fighters also. One of my most difficult fights was billed as the top 5 USA fighters against the top 5 Canadians up in Nanaimo BC. Great group of fighters, even though I won, the guy I fought took me out to dinner after the fight with the rest of his team. We are still friends.

The true shame of this whole fiasco call the Olympics, is how the people competing are treated
. And yeah Im going in some dark water here, and I really don't care. The woman Italian boxer, faced off against a male, that had been banned from other woman's sporting events, and permitted to fight a woman by the Olympic committee. I have to call BS on this !! I dont want to get political cause I dont want to get banned, but politics has killed the Olympics and taken the dream away from some outstanding young people.

I'm not interested in watching this BS.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) held a press conference Monday and categorically confirmed that the two fighters currently participating in Olympic women’s boxing are “male,” because they failed a previous gender chromosome test.
As we have highlighted, a furore has erupted over Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan and Imane Khelif of Algeria who are both now in the semi-finals of the women’s boxing in Paris. Both fighters were previously disqualified from competing in the women’s category by the IBA.
During the IBA gathering, CEO Chris Roberts said that the 2022 test results for the fighters by an independent laboratory in Istanbul “demonstrated the chromosomes we refer to in competition rules that make both boxers ineligible.”
Roberts emphasised that both Khelif and Yu-ting were informed that they tested positive for XY chromosomes and were allowed to appeal the findings to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the IBA offering to cover the costs. Roberts noted that Yu-ting chose not to appeal, and Khelif did initially but then withdrew the appeal.
Both boxers were then re-tested in India during the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships, with the same results being recorded. — Modernity News

Just haven't been all that interested this time around. I don't believe it is all the boy/girl boxer stuff, break dancing, polluted river, etc. but that does play into it. Maybe it's more me. Different things seem more fun at different times. Sometimes I'm more interested in tractors. Sometimes it shooting and reloading. Sometimes it's projects.

A "she" like those Eastern European "female" athletes in the not-so-good old times? 😎

Olympics? Not for me: nothing but politics and money (and a huge waste of that), and there's not even a cease-fire for the duration... Let those athletes compete like 2,400 years ago (barefoot in the Greek heat; without the media and commercial circus but with eternal fame as only reward for the winner) and I might be interested.

On topic: I rather spend time on the BX... 😗

Come on Skeets, this was supposed to be a fun thread….

The IBA's status in the boxing community has declined in recent years.[3] It governed boxing at the Summer Olympics until 2020, after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the organization in 2019 due to governance and finance issues. In the interim, an IOC-run task force has overseen the boxing competitions at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, with the sport's status for the 2028 Summer Olympics currently undetermined. In 2020, Umar Kremlev was elected president of the organisation, with a promise of taking on reforms and paying off the organisation's debt.

Kremlev's tenure has been controversial, with critics citing his close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin, his involvement of state-owned oil company Gazprom as a sponsor in 2021 and 2022, and irregularities during subsequent presidential elections. These concerns intensified amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, prompting a group of national federations to establish an advisory group demanding transparency over the IBA's finances, and committing continued support for boxing as an Olympic event. This group evolved into a competing sanctioning body—World Boxing—in 2023. In June 2023, the IOC voted to formally strip the IBA of its status as its international federation for boxing, due to a lack of sufficient progress on addressing governance, finance, and corruption concerns; the IBA became the first federation to ever be expelled from the Olympic movement.

I feel the same way. Card board beds, no AC, and barely palatable/ questionable food.

And I was absolutely horrified that they didn't move the triathlon somewhere else. Expecting them to swim in a cesspool was beyond ridiculous. Everyone competing should have demanded a different venue.

I enjoy watching the competition at the Olympics, but I hate the NBC coverage. They've ruined most of it for me, but the lesser-watched events are still good without all the stories about whatever obstacles athlete X has overcome.

As far as the boxer in question, that's a tricky one as it's a very rare disorder to be an actual female with female parts, but having the XY chromosome. This isn't the normal politicized transgender thing, but still a mess nonetheless. She's got more testosterone running through her body than I do...

Only like to watch the events that are 'fastest, strongest, distance' ones like runs and pole vaults, weights, shooting
Have ZERO interest in 'sports' like break dancing , 'subjective' ones.

'diving' is tricky, GREAT talent but yeesh was that 2 or 3 spins ? without super slo-mo, I can't tell !

What I am FED UP with is the fact these are PROs advertising for their sponsors.

Anyone wonder why we didn't see any trans people in the rhythmic gymnastics or other events where strength would not be an asset?
