NICE you found the cause and a FREE fix( cept for a few grey hairs and a cupl cuss words....) Most ball joints like that , when used as tie rod ends on small rider mowers, have a 'thin' nut used as a 'jam nut'. Any chance one could be added in this installation ??
BTW I've copied and save your picture, as mine's a 2018.....just in case....

Thanks Jay. No, there is NO room for a jam nut. A jam nut will put the ball joint outward away from the joystick to far and cause binding because its not allowing it to be straight up and down to the shaft connection point. Any slight out of square will cause it to be an issue. You want that ball joint moving straight up and down in its travel points. There is not much room for error. Tolerances are pretty tight with this joystick set-up. If yours come loose, just apply blue loctite to the BJ threads and tighen it back up real snug. I dont think mine will cause any problems of loosening, but hey, yah never know. I`ll be watching this for awhile and see if anything new develops.

Yessss sirrrrrrrrrrrrr, expensive little tractors and they WILL make you says things from time to time ;)
No problem, help yourself to the picture, thats why i posted it, to hopefully help others.

I agree, pretty chitty design in my opinion. If it ever comes loose again, i`ll just drill an tap a hole in the topside of the joystick and put a set screw in it to lock it in place so it cant back out again.
