2010 M6040 HD1 starting issue

Checked ground strap, charged battery to 100%, tested battery, battery ok.
Acts like it is going to ground. key to start the instrument panel goes dark and the starter solenoid clicks and the instr. panel goes blank. Relay? Starter? Something is grounding the voltage to zero. Wait a bit and try again and the same series of events. Help.

I would def try a different battery since your battery is more than 2 years old. Next is measure amp drawn by starter.
If you would have an intermittent or bad earth you would have clicking and dash wouldn't go blank.
How did you tested the battery?

I agree bad battery. Did you "load test" the battery?

A simple test is to use a battery jumper cable to directly connect the battery positive to the positive (battery) on the starter. Just touch the clamp to the post to see if the starter will turn normally. It should not engage the engine.

Be prepared for sparks and wear safety glasses.

I agree with the others about it being a battery issue. A short to ground would blow fuses.

Batteries can show sufficient voltage but still not have enough amps to crank the engine.

Have you put a load tester on the battery and got a satisfactory rating for your battery?

If your battery is 100% and Something is grounding the voltage to zero, the source of the grounding would be immediately evident. You would have a 4th of July fire works celebration going off someplace in your wiring. I had a 00 cable from the battery to the starter solenoidal that had been rubbing and rubbed the insulation through to the copper. It took less than 10 seconds for it to burn through the cable and destroy other things.

I strongly doubt that you are grounding out a good fully charged battery.

Take the cables off the battery and clean them good. Same thing happened to me and nothing looked dirty but that was the problem.

I would def try a different battery since your battery is more than 2 years old. Next is measure amp drawn by starter.

Thanks for the input. Sometimes the most obvious seems to allude us. Load tested and battery shot but showed 12.6 volts. Three years old. I then tested a ten year old battery(an old Exide Nascar Battery group 65). It tested fine and still starts my old 79 Dodge 3/4 ton. Just kept it charged. By the way, I was born in Bolton, Lancashire 9/22/1949.

Three years old.Found an Autocraft group 31 farm and tractor battery at Advanced w/950 cca and 190 reserve. Works great. I then tested a ten year old battery(an old Exide Nascar Battery group 65). It tested fine and still starts my old 79 Dodge 3/4 ton. Just kept it charged.
