It's kind of an 'apples vs oranges' thing..... either will do the job.

If gear trannies were 'better', cars and pickups would still have stick shifts:)
Most, if not all 'heavy equipment' run hydro and not too many Holmes 500 wreckers today :)

If hydrostats were "better" for tillage, high HP AG tractors would have hydrostats.

Heavy equipment machines are hydrostat equipped for different reasons.

Do not confuse a hydrostat with an automotive/LT type transmission.

lets not argue about the benefits of a slush box versus a real gear box. Common sense should tell you the reason why slush boxes in the automotive world are more popular as well as in the small tractor world.

It's because people today don't know how to shift gears or use a clutch. Most don't even have a clue about it. Applies to small tractors too.

Flip you say, "It's because people today don't know how to shift gears or use a clutch. Most don't even have a clue about it...."

The reason they don't know how to shift gears or use a clutch is because very few vehicles have such things these days....so there is not need to know how to use them! Before their time it was determined something else was better.

It's also a 'numbers' game. it's real CHEAP to make 50 MILLION low HP pickup automatics compared to maybe 10,000 high HP farm tractors. I don't know th real numbers but there's a LOT more pickups than tractors so it's not cost effective to engineer 'hydro' tractors

given choices, I'd prefer diesel/electric like choochoos. EASY to control, cheap to make.

Out west you used to be able to get TWO different driver's licenses, one -automatic only, 2 stick and auto......

When I was looking at breaking a new 1/2 acre I looked at the Manual for my L3600
It is rated to pull a Double 14" I didn't go that direction in the end but it is rated for it

The real thing is the "Dirt" :D I could probably pull a double 14" easily in my dirt, but the condition and even the time of year you drop that plow makes a big difference

ps: I have Loaded Ags, an FEL 4x4 & Gears

I ended up getting a Middle Buster plow to actually break the ground and a Cultivator for my now 1 acre plot That worked best for me

BTW I have found my Box Blade to be very handy when clearing and leveling a plot

Big tractors are becoming much closer to being hydrostatic drive. Many are using a variation that is a combination of hydrostatic with hydraulic shift gear box. Hydrostatic is also easier to maintain full power and torque to the ground without power hopping like a gear transmission by being able to adjust the speed to the point of spinning. That’s why most bulldozers built are hydrostatic. Gear drives are great, but hydrostatic is becoming a much more efficient way of power transmission.

It's not the cost but the efficiency. Many high HP AG tractors have very expensive and complicated CVT gear type transmissions but they are not hydrostats.

Yes, Diesel/electric (and probably gasoline/electric) is the future.
