Tackled the electrical gremlins on my new to me tractor today. Removed all of the extra electrical garbage that was installed, got the lights working and even the horn....lol. It does not appear that the hour meter is working, if I turn the key switch on. Should it be working in the "on" position, or does the tractor actually have to be running for it to register?

It works in the on position, there is nothing that the motors running does that could trigger it. ;)

Mine works in the on position but that can give you a false reading if you forget and leave it on after you shut off the engine.I have not checked the oil pressure light yet but I've seen them connected in that circuit so that it would not run unless you have oil pressure.

The meter on my '79 B7100DT gear runs with the key in the on position, without the engine running.

My 1977 B7100 meter starts ticking time as soon as I turn the key to the on position.
If it isn't, have you confirmed that the meter actually works. My 1st suggestion would be to confirm that it does by hooking it to a power supply. My clock give off an audible ticking sound.

It also works when you glow the plugs!:D It does not measure "run" time - just power to the meter "time":)

I've confirmed that it is shot. Removed it from the dash and hooked it to the battery charger leads. I also had power to the connector when it was in the tractor as well.

Time stands still while using this tractor....lol

Just makes me wonder how many hours are really on this tractor. Hourmeter shows 2072 hours. To me, the tractor does not seem to have that many hours on it.

Maybe the original gauge failed and someone put in a used gauge with more hours on it. I like that story....I'm sticking with it....lol

More likely story is someone left the key On and ran up the hours! ;)

I can see that happening pretty easily. I am going to make it a point to shut the tractor key switch off before I kill the engine, in order to avoid this. The glowing oil light should be a dead giveaway as well...but sometimes I'm not that smart.
