When I purchased my tractor it came with a snowcaster that wasn't working. Both bearings were frozen. I'd like to get it up and running before winter hits here in Vermont. When I mounted and plugged in the front pto it didn't engage. I've tested it on a fresh battery and still can't get it to engage. It continues to spin freely from the shaft. Does anyone know if these are serviceable? Or if there is an alternative? Any help is much appreciated, still fairly new to tractors.

It sounds like the magnetic coil has an open somewhere in it. If it's working properly, it will engage the pulley when +12V is applied to it. If you hooked it up directly to a battery bypassing any switches, it's most likely shot. I assume you grounded it when testing? It grounds itself through the mounting bolts.

If the coil is shot, you probably won't be able to get a replacement from Kubota. If I remember correctly, it's the same one used on 63-74ish Ford/Merc/Lincoln AC compressors made by Tecumseh.

Ones for riders typically draw about 4 amps of current, kr-thunk when working . Check the resistance of the coil, blue to ground...maybe 3 Ohms. If 'open' ,that explains why it doesn't work.
Carefully open it up, might just be the blue 'feed' wire has disconnected from the electromagnet coil wire( it's soldered). Otherwise coil is 'open'.
You can, if careful, just rewind the coil. Measure the wire for size, consult chart for 'ohms per foot', math for 3 ohms worth ( a lotta feet), buy the wire, make a jig, make the coil, install and test.If you start when Mr. Sun gets up, you'll be 'up and running' by lunch time.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I did hook it directly to a battery and grounded it. Nothing happened. I'll try to pull it apart to check for a loose wire. I don't think I'll be able to respool the wire. Not sure how to do that. I'll look into the ford AC compressor. Again thanks for the help.

N3BP is correct on replacement. 65-82 Ford LTD & Torino used this clutch on a York AC compressor. Look for an Everco reman #48809. Currently about 190 bucks on Ebay. Additionally if your snowcaster is a 748, the end bearings are a hex bearing #Rx84, available from Salem Power Equipment, Plymouth Michigan at $20 each.
