Hello All,

I have an early 70's L200 that I have recently inherited and I am have some issues getting it started. I've done quite a bit of re-wiring, new glow plugs, tossed in a new battery, drained and replaced fuel, oil, etc. At this point it has compression but I don't think it is getting fuel. how would I go about checking to see if the fuel pump is working properly? Also, the resistance coil begins to smoke when I am trying to start it.

Any help, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Start seeing where you have fuel flow. There is probably a petcock on bottom of tank. Take the fuel line off at the top of the filter and see if fuel flows out. If not see if petcock can be opened or blow a bit of compressed air into the fuel line to see if it is clogged (loosen fuel cap some or you will be sorry-don't ask how I know that). Once you have fuel there, move to the end of fuel line at the injector pump and see if fuel come through filter to pump. If so move up to the injectors and loosen the lines there (make sure you know how to do this safely)

You can do it in reverse order if you prefer.

Is there smoke coming out of the exhaust? If no, then yes you need to follow the above post. How do you know if you have the proper amount of compression? Did you do a compression test?

Do the glow plugs activate?
Bleeding injectors as mentioned should help. Also make sure the 3 point lever isnt all the way up, it maybe loading hydraulics.

When starting put hand throttle to full throttle and 3-point to full down. If you get white smoke then you have fuel. If it doesn't crank fast enough it won't start. The starter may need rebuilding. If the injectors are not atomizing the fuel it won't start. If you don't have at least 330psi compression it won't start. You can get a cheap compression gauge from HarborFreight for around 30 bucks. It screws in to the glow plug holes. The glow plug eye is probably full of insect nests and debris is why it is smoking. It is nothing but a hot wire. It should glow while you are cranking.
