I am a landscaper and love me BX25. It impresses me with its power everyday. But I need to see if anyone has some advise for a post hole digger. I am going to be planting 400 trees later next month. I will need a 18" hole about 18" deep for the root ball. Will the BX with a LP PD15 handle a 18" auger at that depth? I know the 12" is the biggest spec for the BX, but since I'm only going down 18" will it be okay? trying to avoid renting a skid steer if my BX will handle it. Thanks

You might have to dig real slowly with that big of an auger, also depending on what type of soil your boring into. In this rocky assed ground a 9" for 6x6 posts is probably the max.

IM thinking that might be a tad on the big side for a 19 HP PTO

I'm pretty sure that the BX would be way underpowered for that auger. The best option is to rent a Toro Dingo with the 18" auger. We did that last fall to plant trees with a 32" rootball, And the Toro was a lifesaver. Good luck!

I know it's nice to bore a clean perfect sized hole, and looks professional, but if you have a couple HF tarps, and practice with the backhoe, you can do anything you need and not stress the equipment. After the tree is in, refill the dirt, and lift the tarp. That way there's not soil all over the lawn or sidewalk.

If you have too...auger a 12" and use a hand held post hole digger to make it 18"

I like the backhoe plan...

I'd vote for the skid loader for the simple fact of how many you are doing.

While not 400, I planted 50 green giants and used a 24 in bit on a skid steer. Hydraulic down pressure would sell me over for your project for the simple thought of speed. Plus a skid steer is much easier to line up on a mark especially if it is something that is not in a straight line. We did those 50 holes in 30ish mins taking our time. I think if you had your stuff together, you'd only need a morning rental if you rental yard isn't too far away.

Just my two ¢
