Hello all,

So my dealer has found me a mx5400 tractor they traded for. The one I ordered still has not come in. But they traded for this tractor and got it in house. Only thing is it has 13.6x28 rear R1 tires on it. This is going to be a field farming tractor a lot so I wanted R1s. This tractor will sometimes work in heavy wet clay so I thought I wanted 14.9x26. They are not able to find any used ones just to get me going. Does the 1.3" tire width make that big of a difference with rutting / compaction? What would be the better choice for me? Taller but thinner or wider but not as tall.

I guess the 2" extra ground clearance will help with ground clearance for spraying and side dressing too but I always thought I wanted a wider tire in that clay. Maybe the 1.3" isn't that big of deal and I should just take it as is?

I don't know if there's that big of difference between those two tires that you will notice. When I bought my MX-6000 last June I wanted the wider R-4's for more float. My Mx gets lots of hours on it during the summer spot spraying fields and pastures. I didn't want the R-1's with the big cleats. As a matter of fact I only saw one Kubota 60 HP and less that had R-1's tires on it at dealer lots and it was a L-2501.

Where are you getting the extra 2” of ground clearance? The 14.9x26 is slightly taller.
The tread pattern is different between the two also, the 13.6x28 has more smaller lugs that are spaced closer together opposed to the 14.9x26 with larger single bar lugs.

13.6 and 14.9 x 26 are common COMBINE tires, least in my neck of the woods. Got 2 great ones ,on rims $100 from dealer after a 'combine demo derby' 10-12 years ago.
14.9s are taller than 13.6s.

Agreed. Almost no difference in ground clearance but a world of difference in traction between R1s and R4s. R4s will not pull the hat off of your head.
