10 acres 3' tall Needs Bush hogging

This is going to be tough, I really want to task my new L3901. BUT I don't want to spend all day in the seat.

Which would you take? Your L3901 and 5' rotary mower? OR your 45 HP Farmtrac with 6' Rotary mower?

I have to say - that Heavy Old Farmtrac sure does well in tall stuff. I promised the charming spouse I would sell it off after I bought the new Kubota - But Jobs like this sometimes call for the extra butt that the old school machine has.

Time to find out if the 3901 will spin the 6 foot bushhog in 3 foot stuff or not. If it works, your golden. If it don’t, new bigger orange and 2 for sale signs.... or take all day with the 5 footer. 3901 may be stouter than u think

Why add hours to your new tractor? Use the old, larger tractor to mow the parcel the first time before selling it.

FWIW: Tall weeds mow easily but it may be more difficult to see obstacles. Thick grass pulls much harder.

Seems to me if you have to hold up your end of the deal and sell the farmtrac I'd want to test out the new tractor to see how well it actually does.

If you plan to not hold up your deal, then just keep using the Farmtrac... oh and is your couch comfortable?

Your tractor will mow 3’ weeds just fine, mine does anyway with a 5’ brush mower. I’ve cut weeds higher than my hood, while I do need to go a little slower it will cut it no problem.

I’d cut a little bit with the Kubota and see if you think it’s taking too long and if it is switch to the other. You’ll find that it will cut it just fine. Is this your property or do you know it well? I can mow mine rather quickly because I know where the trouble spot will be. When I mowed a friends 5 acres it took me a while because it was very thick honey suckle and I didn’t know the area very well.

If you use the Kubota in the tall stuff be sure to watch your temperature gauge, mine got plugged up pretty fast and I had to clean out the screen in front of the radiator a few times.

I would go over it once at high set with the bigger machine then take it again with your Kubota, and it should handle the 6' shredder.

I had 9 acres that needed cut back last summer. First time in 5 or so years. My B3200 with a 5' Woods brush hog didn't break a sweat. Everything from thick berry brambles to field olives 4-6' high and up to 3" in diameter, it just ate them up. My big concern was the unknowns, rocks and large tree branches. It was farmed in the past so I was safe from stumps. I'll be going at it again this weekend to knock it down so I can spray the field with tick killer

Your toy is bigger than mine, should be a walk in the park.

Three foot tall huh?

The problem will be having too much material build up under the rotary mower's deck causing its clutch to spin. I'd first cut it with a sickle mower; let dry and then go over it again with a rotary cutter to chop it up. Dry material chops much easier and doesn't "bunch" up like it does when wet.

Did worst than that with my L3800.

Make sure it is very dry out there and yes check your radiator and temp gauge. Mine needed some clean-up after some time mowing in tall stuff.

If it's good grass see if a local farmer wants it for hay.

I got about 2.5acre field to cut hasn't been hogged in about 8yrs or so. Thick blackberry, honey suckle, wild rose bushes, grass, weeds, lots of saplings. I will do it with my L2501 and LP 5ft cutter, set high the first time. I'm going to ride it with my 4wheeler first, see what obstacles and trouble spots I find. Then with tractor keep the FEL low and just take my time for the first pass. I think your L3901 and 5ft cutter will do just fine, give the 6ft one a try on it too.

Did it with the Old School. Just something about hitting 4th gear and getting after it.

Ill get around to breaking in the L3901 soon.

We all got our toys to use, not abuse, but I paid way too much for mine to not use it and use an old tractor instead if I had that chore to do. Only way I’d use the old one is if someone else was buying the fuel, but I’m probably too hard headed to even do it then. I really like time on my new tractor I guess.

Just cut 2 acres with 3901 hst with 6 foot rotary. Put it in low 2500 rpm and got the deck up pretty high and no problem. Took me about an hour and a half the grass was over the hood of the tractor. I did snap 4 shear bolts but that's a couple bucks.
