*1 The initial 50 hours should not be a replacement (changing) cycle?

Ok so I am at 50 hours with my BX23s and I am a bit confused by the conflicting notes at the end of the "Service Interval" table in the manual.

I notice that for the first three items (Engine Oil, Engine Oil Filter, Transmission Oil Filter) There is a ***9678; which indicates: "You must perform the jobs indicated by ***9678; after the first 50 hours of operation." However in the notes there is "*1 The initial 50 hours should not be a replacement (changing) cycle?"

So which is it? Do I have to perform these tasks or not. This is a bit confusing. What is a replacement cycle and what is not? Would someone mind ELI5?

From my reading at 50 hrs you change oil and filter and "just" the hyro filter(s).

Not necessary to change the hydro fluid at the 50 hr service.

Many here have noted at the 50hr mark the magnet on the hydro filter has metal pieces stuck to it so glad they changed it.

There have been and may always be some "typos" or information that contradicts in the same manual for the same machine that varies over the model or year of machine.

The real question boils down to the tranny/hst oil......... change or not.

YOU should change ALL filters/clean screens.....and engine oil - but changing the hydraulic/hst oil is the one that some books say ...50 hours - some say 200 hours.

Like Creature said - sometimes you see some stuff on the screen/filter that make you say "mmmmmmmmmmm - that aint good!"

The first change is probably the most important change in the life of your engine/hst - so throw caution to the wind........change it!

Kevmo,,, that first 50 hours washes most all the little things out of where ever they sneak in to ,,soo yeah change engine oil and filter thats a no brainer, change the hydro filter, again no brainer,, there is a filter screen that should be cleaned as well,, and if you have a quick hand you wont lose to much hydro oil. You might find a bunch of stuff in the screen,, which means its doing its job!! and when you get to your next change everything change the hydro to SUDT, will cost a bit more but, in MHO you will see a change in your machine, the whine will go almost away... Just do it one step at a time learn your machine and suddenly it aint rocket science no more

This is an often debated topic.
I’m in the minority with changing all fluids at 50 hours. Given the chance again.... I would do the same.....
You spent almost $20,000 for your BX23S. Round numbers, 3.5 gallons of SUDT2 is $80, and you probably won’t change again for a couple/few years.
I know I have NEVER heard of a mechanical/engine problem due to changing oil or fluid too often.
Is the $80 worth it?
Only you can answer that question.....

The way I read it: the 50 hour mark doesn’t reset the clock for the subsequent service. E.g., if the interval is 200 hours for engine oil and filter, you do the first change at 50 hours, and the second at 200, not 250 hours.

Ditto with what JackJ said. The 50 hour maintenance items do not effect the downstream compliance times.

If you can establish that your transmission was given a factory fill (or dealer fill) of SUDT2 then there is no need to change fluid. Why, it's not an engine, contaminants aren't being continually introduced into the oil. It has filters and/or screen to collect wear-in particles, the oil isn't breaking down in such a short space of time. But like any oil thread, everybody has a different opinion! YMMV.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I completed my 50 Hour service on Sunday and opted to replace filters and leave the current SUDT2 in my machine after inspecting the filters and finding 0 metallic particles.

I spoke with the service guys at the shop and they indicated that changing the SUDT2 at 50 hours in not necessary at all and I have nothing to worry about.

I then took her out back to continue clearing some areas of my property and ran over hidden boards with nails still in them puncturing my front left tire in 2 places. Previous owner decided that leaving garbage/trash in the woods was fine since no-one would see it. I dont understand how peoples minds work sometimes. Maybe its because I have grown up on construction site but proper disposal of demo'ed materials is key to safety, ahhh next time.

how did you pull the screen out.....clean it and lose very little of the fluid?

85Hokie, are you talking about the Transmission Strainer or the Transmission Filter.

Oh I lost a bit of Transmission Fluid when I changed out the Transmission Filter, but quick hands an back-pressure prevent it from being more than 1L.

The strainer it doesn't say to clean until the 400 hour mark, should I be checking and cleaning that as well at the 50 hour mark?

So if we don't know what hydraulic fluid is in our machines..... Is it ok to use SUPER UDT2 or Standard UDT to top off?

They dont even sell UDT at the shop I go to in town.

What year is your BX23s? If it is new chances are it has SUDT2 already inside of it.
