Unless you are actually LOSING a measurable amount of front axle fluid…I’d leave it alone. (and that wetness might actually only be evidence it’s been greased occasionally.)

My 1996-vintage M4700 has a PLASTIC fuel filler neck….. mated to a PLASTIC CAP….. It’s HIGH on FRICTION…and a pain in the ARSE to get the threads engaged …even tho’ they are completely UN-damaged. I wish there were a simple METAL CAP to replace that plastic cap.
