    Big Bang

I find it interesting that for many physicists, the search for answers to "why" and "how" only strengthens their faith in a Supreme being. There definitely seems to be a plan on how things transpired but it will definitely take some time to understand, even if only superficially. I for one am...

    Just gota vent

Brother Skeets, Taxation is the new gold mine for our governments, both big and small. Try renting a car for that cheapo "special" $29 a day rate and by the time they tack on the taxes and fees, it's $60 a day. Same with hotel rooms out here in Phoenix. The taxes equal the room rate. In most...

    Welding Wire

RCW, I have a friend that welds for his business periodically. He tried to tell me welding helmets are solar rechargeable. I told him the photocell on the helmet is to trigger the darkening. He doesn't believe me. He'll learn the hard way. Everyone please: CHANGE YOUR BATTERY AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR.

    Welding Wire

I need cheater lenses to find my welding "hemmit." Gotta say to anyone out there: Buy a good helmet if you are thinking about trying welding. I was using the HF $45 on sale models and while they seemed to work OK and came with "good" ratings, my eyes hurt after a day of welding. Not good. I...

    Welding Wire

There is an instructor who has classes at the local welding supply shop after hours. I just haven't been able to hook up with him yet. He gets rave reviews. It's a one-class event that runs about 4 hours. Now that I know kind-of what I am doing, I would get more out of it. I think the class runs...

    Welding Wire

Yooper, Wish I did live closer! I can always use more advice. This was my second project (the gates I mentioned) two years ago and the quality improved somewhat once I got the gas turned on! LOL...

    Welding Wire

Wish I could weld Meetoo! Man-o-man my first attempts looked like CRAPPOLLA!!! I watched Chucky2009 over again and realized I had my polarity wrong for gas welding and later I realized gas welding works best if you remember to turn the gas tank on. (That is a pro tip I offer for free...)...

dlsmith, I was a Titan II Missile Launch Officer in Tucson, AZ. Our standby generator was a diesel, the same type used in the last WWII submarines. It was just a couple feet shorter that the one in your picture (a six cylinder) and, like nearly everything on the site, it was on a frame that...

    Have you ever

"...only to realize that tool is at home, 150 miles away." I fought my wife's urge to do a summer home in Flagstaff for 30 years. She finally came to her senses but having to buy duplicate tools for the"other" house was a real wake up call for her. She is used to me doing repairs as necessary...

    Have you ever

Len, I ran across a replacement chipper blade for my chipper and bought it as a spare. That was 15 years ago and it disappeared. This week, I do long overdue MX on my chipper, pull out the old blade (great shape) and sharpen it. I go to my tool box and open a drawer and there is the new...

    dismounting is not a failure

I hand picked over 500 small bushes (burr sage) across two acres getting ready to try and spread seed from some nicer bushes and plants in the Spring. Everywhere I opened up, the chamomile moved in. This winter I have to spray a few gallons of pre-emergent to try and control the chamomile but...

Hadda dismount for this one... Ocotillo down from last weeks storm. Probably 400lbs. 50/50 chance it will make it. See all the dry weeds? Globe chamomile. Not native to AZ. Appeared all over my area last Spring. Impervious to Roundup.

    Weekend Activity

A friend lives in Nova Ohio and he said there are a collection of locos in Eastern Ohio that are daily runners but have the odd outside driveshaft for the bogies. Very cool to see them running. He was so stoked, he ordered a steam whistle and plans to run it off some steam source you can build...

    dismounting is not a failure

GREAT idea Len. I was hauling more branches to the dumpster today. On-Off-On-Off time 50. Why is getting on and off a machine so dang exhausting? It can't be because were too heavy. Muscle just weighs so much more than fat!

    dismounting is not a failure

Thanks! Truth be known, I have adopted Frank's adage: If you can't weld good, weld lots. What I am really good at is grinding. :) I did it outside and the wind picked up towards the end. MIG welding never works as well in the wind. I need to make a wind break. That's another project.
