My nephew has an L3600 leaking out of the PTO shaft. The repair looks straightforward except for one item - there is a splined coupling between the output shaft and the PTO drive shaft. I assume the coupling is free to stay on either shaft or, most likely in my experience, fall off in the gearcase. Assuming it falls down in the gearcase, will I/he be able to fish it out through the PTO hole?

Yes you can get to it.
The norm is the splined coupling with stay in the case on the front shaft.
