Went to lunch today with a couple of guys from the lodge, you know how that goes. Talk about kids and cars/trucks and what ever solving all the troubles of the world. And the one younger fellow said he was gathering stuff to make a waste oil burner for his garage, and being that he has several large pieces of farm equipment, he does wind up with a bunch of used oil. He said it was an oil drip and he went into detail, and in my own warm and loving fatherly way told him he was outa his freekin mind, and I would bring the hotdogs when it caught fire in the garage. Now it sounded kind of sketchy to me, and I Utubed it and it still looks crazy at best. Has anyone here ever made a crazy thing like that, seems to me to be a bomb just waiting to go off.

Got to have the correct nozzle and great filtering too. Typically the oil needs to be thinned a bit, sometimes not - has to be somewhat clean too.

not sketchy but highly regulated in a lot of places like here. they make engineered professional units all the way down to homemade drip systems.
takes a lot of oil though.
compared to 1 cord of dry pine, you need about 2 barrels (100+ gallons) of used motor oil to make same amount of btu's !!
my buddy had one in his garage for a few years.... it worked OK
but not worth the hassle for me.
You have to clean it regularly or it gets clogged up and flames out.
might work better with clean oil like Hokie said... but at that point your defeating the purpose of a waste oil heater.
I bought one of these last year.... works great.
I run home heating oil in it/offroad diesel.

Many people, especially garages use waste oil for heat. Relatively cheap, but more maintenance involved and it does not work well with oil contaminated with coolant. It is kind of dirty though.
As far as blowing up your garage it would no more dangerous than a fuel oil furnace. BTU's should be at least as good as fuel oil if not higher.

There was/is a Youtuber that is "relatively famous” for making homemade waste oil burners of different designs.
I am currently saving my used oil in an IBC tote to make one………..one day……after my other 239,754 projects are done.
This guy is the guy I was talking about, he makes it look fairly easy.

I have a commercial waste oil burner (clean burn) and absolutely love it. I clean it at 750 hours. Usually 2-3 times a year. I leave for a week+ in the winter and don't worry about it. The oil gets pumped into the supply tank through an automotive filter. It has a total of five "filters" and I've cleaned the last filter on the suction side , once in 10 years.. It heats the shop and the house and it's a lot less work than burning wood.

Decades ago the local auto mechanic that I use to take my vehicle to for servicing had a waste oil burner heating his shop. Kept the shop and office area toasty warm. Considering how much heated air probably escaped every time he opened a shop bay door it must have had significant BTU capacity.

yes in mine.
Mine rated for all crank oils, ATF, hydraulic, #2/#4 & #5 fuel oils
in my case i would never consider a used oil boiler again. Cause I have access to wood it is so much easier for me to put up 1 cord of pine (24" rnds @ 12"-18" diameter ideally) vs the collecting / handling of the 100 gallons equivalent amount of used oils. If I need more oil than i have on hand my local dump lets me take all i want back.
But I have free disposal of oils at my local dump, pine is free for the work/effort around my parts, etc.... One big advantage the oil boiler has is its run time between fills is so much greater than run time of a batch fed boiler.

The only place that take used oil around here is my Kubota dealer. Assuming you purchase from them. Tractor Supply use to, but have not for years. Almost no free disposal of anything up here. Only recyclable waste take free are aluminum cans.
Replacing the asphalt shingles with steel over the garage. Dumpster company has a decent fee for building material waste only. Not so decent if I contract for a general waste dumpster with a long list of prohibited items like oil, tires, electronics....

Growing up in the fuel and oil business we heated the two shops we had at my folks truck stop, filling station with used oil. Back in the 60's 70's and 80's Lainair was a big dog in waste oil furnaces dripper's were the early ones then the later ones used compressed air. Before they sold out the fuel business and retired they had switch over to clean burn brand. I have built and ran a few homemade ones and they work good if you have a good clean source of used oil. I haven't burned used oil in years. Around here the demand is great enough you can sell your used oil if you have a fair amount of it. I had been burning wood in a Garn boiler to heat my shop and house until it needed rebuilt a few years ago so I switched back to propane. I am done cutting fire wood. Every thing goes to the burn pile now when we clean up around the farm.
