Upon a fluid change my right side transmission drain bolt has stripped the threads in the case. I have the trans already drained and tire is off. I"m assuming i'll need to removed the case where the drain is and repair.
What is an effective repair? Helicoil ? Overside plug? Will the case slide off the axle or will i need a puller? Interested in any suggestions and tips on this process including sealant type (black RTV?) and methods.
Thank you

Never used a thread repair. Will the Helicoil hold up when removing the drain bolt in the future? Is it better than a Time Sert? Just concerned about getting it fixed for the long haul
Thanks
Helicoil thread inserts are commonly used in the factory by OEMs to get stronger threads in aluminum parts. Does that assuage your concerns?

You will need the appropriate STI tap and tap drill in addition to the insert itself. Very little material is removed with the drill and then you tap it like any standard tap.

Timeserts are Helicoils give the same end results = new threads at the original size.

Timeserts are different than Helicoils and I personally like the Timesert design more but that means absolutely nothing to their function.

You can get an individual kit for Helicoil (drill, tap and insert…) but I don’t think Timesert offers that.

All of the Navy sonar electronic cabinet components that were aluminum
had helicoils installed in every hole.

So I will pile on. I have a tool & die shop and did a fair amount for NASA, they wanted inserts in all tapped holes.

Try a local auto parts store bring in the old plug and ask them for a plus one or a plus 2 plug to replace it without seeing it it's hard to say if this will work I'm going on the assumption that it's a standard drain plug like you would find in any type of oil pan

They use a standard metric flange bolt for that plug, Just upsize it one size, tap it.
