With 70°F it was time to get the snow plow off and get ready for Spring 💐

Most was done in about 15 minutes. Get Kubota out, drop snow plow, attach forks, go back in to pick RFM off shelf, take it outside and drop it, remove the forks, grab snow plow and set it on the shelf, put the bucket on and go grab chains/slings/winch to work on RFM maintenance.

Now for the RFM deck. The 7-1/2' deck needs to be flipped upside-down and set on saw horses to clean the underside. That's where the winch comes in. First, pick it up by the rear wheels and stand it on the front using the 3-point frame as a kick stand. Next rig the two front wheels with chains to the slotted angle to pick the front end of the deck. For the rear of the deck, hook a sling to the TPH frame and bring it over the deck to the winch. Snug the winch line, raise the FEL and head for the saw horses. Raise the FEL higher and then run the winch cable out to rotate it down. Went really slick and probably took longer to type this than to rig and flip the deck.

The underside of the deck already has a few different coatings so it seemed like a good idea to remove as much as possible without buying a sandblaster. Out came the Dremel Multimax and an old blade. It wasn't magical but it worked. There were sweet spots regarding the speed and angle of attack. In general about half speed and the side of the blade at about a 45° angle worked. That is being followed by a wire wheel in the angle grinder.

Now on to reading various threads to determine WHAT to coat it with. Over the last 30-some years I tried different paints, Lanox, Fluid Film, some sort of bitumen - and I'm still searching for something that's ALMOST perfect:)

Here are some different types of undercoats but I have never used these products.

I would suggest you use this primer. It is very hard and smooth after it cures. You might need a topcoat but you can ask them if that is needed under the mower deck. I also recommend using the cleaner and etcher that is available (supplied in tank seal kits).

(My beloved EA implements required some lovin’)
The EA box blade and land leveler have a CAT 2/CAT 1 pin with a touch over 4" of CAT 2 pin available. I'd like to find CAT 3 (1-7/16") to CAT 2 (1-1/8") bushings that are 4" long which is probably impossible, but at least find some that are 2" long that I can slide onto the EA pins and leave them there. I'd need four bushings per implement. That way I can pick up the implement with the QH10 that uses CAT 1 or the QH20 that uses CAT 3. The Land Pride RCR1884 is a special case and I'd need 5-5/8" of bushings on that implement for QH20 use.

Added in edit:

I just ordered two types of CAT 3 to CAT 2 bushings for my implements i.e. eight that are 2-1/2" long and four that are 1-3/4" long. I will cut 1/4" off four of the longer ones and then slide the 2-1/4" and 1-3/4" bushings over the CAT 2 section of the pin shown below. I could weld the two bushings together but that's overkill since they'll live out their lives on the implement. The RCR1884 will use the remaining four of the 2-1/2" long bushings and I could add the off-cuts as well to fill up the 5-3/8" pin width. I'm probably going to sell that cutter this spring so I might be wasting time/money on it but that's ok. That'll do pig.

The photo below shows a bushing that came with the QH20 on the EA CAT 2/CAT 1 pin.

This afternoon I removed the EA box blade, swapped the rock bucket for the standard bucket, moved some dirt and then decided to swap out the QH15 for the new QH20. I'm LOVING the QH20! It's a beast and just looks right on the M6060, and the fact that no bushings are required to connect to the tractor side is a real plus. Bushings for the implements have shipped so I'll be able to use the box blade, land leveler, rear blade and 7ft rotary cutter with the QH20 soon.

I thought it might be interesting to put the QH15 next to the QH20 for a size comparison. There's way more steel in the QH20 which accounts for the 120lb vs. 70lb difference! Looks like I'll have no use for the QH15 (modified to be a QH16).

Wow! That's a substantial difference. Not a part I'd want to be putting on the back of the tractor very often.

Yeah, the plan is to keep it on permanently if I can raise the 3-point enough to clear the RC3712 and disc harrow that pull off the drawbar. If not, I'll be using the floor jack again to take it off and put it on. The jack made it very easy to handle though.

I kinda like the QH20 myself, it looks good on a Kubota M5-091.

I was lucky today.

My wife and I were cleaning out the carport, including moving a 150 kg Unimog winch. I slung it under the forks on the front of the tractor and reversed out of the carport and started backwards down the gravel driveway.

I'm only moving out 30 m - why would I need a ballast box for that I thought....and that was after my wife asked if I thought I needed it.

As I reversed I turned downhill and the tractor started to tip. Didn't need a ballast box, so no seatbelt either. I slid sideways off the seat (not by choice) and headed downhill out of the way. Luckily the tractor stopped tipping so I headed for the high side and lowered the load to the ground.

The tractor sat back down, I hopped on, reversed away from the load and drove down and hooked up the ballast box and started again.

I took a stupid shortcut and was lucky to get away with it. Now I know from some limited experience how easy it is to tip this thing over.

Before you ask, I don't have any ballast in the rear tyres. I'm about to change the wheels and tyres and will be adding liquid ballast to the rear tyres when I do.

Yesterday I used the K3901DT and grapple to move logs to the log splitter. We have had over 5" of rain in the last week or so, so the tractor is now a little muddy.

I set the log splitter up under the lean-to where the tractor is normally stored so I wouldn't be walking around in the mud. Makes a little more work to get the firewood stacked, but at least I wasn't walking around in the mud.

I woke up to elk around the house and an inch or so of snow on the ground with icing sugar flakes falling, and still falling. The worst type snow removal conditions today though with thawed ground and heavy, wet, sticky snow .... yuk! 😖 These are the times when I have to focus on the front blade and keep it running close to the gravel and on the pucks in order to avoid creating more work for myself this spring. Still, being in a tractor is almost always a good thing. The MX runs like a champ and makes a nice change from the M6060.

We got similar sticky snow but it's still blowing so it will be tomorrow's problem.

That tracked beastie is so cool! How is the steering with the tracks up front? Anything weird about it?
It steers almost the same as having tires although it won't turn as sharp. I got the tracks on late but they are fun. The fields are mostly bare now so I may swap out to tires this weekend.

Let my 1880 (AKA oversized garden tractor) rest. Got the mother of winter storms coming in tomorrow. Around 12 inches plus predicted. It will handle it just fine as usual.

Well, almost took off the snowblower this week. Glad I didn’t. Weather called for 4 inches of snow, but I guess Lake Michigan didn’t think that was enough so we are up to 8.5 and counting. Weather is 30-34 so snow is extremely heavy. All the snow finally melted except the tallest drifts too! First time i saw my driveway gravel since moving. I took the PTO off the tractor side and greased it, way easier than I thought for it to go off and on. Thankfully on the snowblower side I can get to it without removal.

Ended up spending almost 2+ hours blowing snow very slow due to the weight of it. Regardless, better than by hand or even with the old back blade!

Loaned it to my BIL :). His L4740 sprung a big hydraulic leak and he needed to push up the manure pile and move round bales. The forks are his. I had the bucket on so he swapped attachments at his place. He was concerned my tractor didn't have "enough meat in its seat" to handle the bale, so he sent me this pic and a thumbs-up. I'm not worried about the tractor vs the manure. His history is bringing the tractor back cleaner than when he gets it.

EDIT: My BIL returned the tractor, and it looks like he detailed it :)

This has and continues to be a weird winter. It was gorgeous here a few days ago in the mid 50's and sunny, and now it's back to snow, and quite a bit of snow, but the NW is supposed to experience a 2-week "heat wave" starting on Wednesday. 🤪

Regardless, lots of elk around the house this morning (more than 40 in all), whitetail too not knowing what to make of the elk, but once they moved off and up the hill I set about blowing and plowing snow on thawed, soft ground. The second photo shows elk poop being sent downrange.
