I have a M5640 and was replacing the two hydraulic filters and noticed that the forward most filter did not have anywhere near the same amount of fluid inside when i removed it peeked my curiosity. I looked in the manual and Workshop manual and i could not anything that identifies what hydraulic functions are supported by each filter, the workshop manual has a flow diagram the show the filters plumbed in parallel but nothing else.

All of the hydraluic functions on the tractor (including loader and backhoe) work fine, i am just curious what functions each filter supports.

Those are suction filters, piped in parallel so they both serve all functions. Two filters are required for the higher flow rate.

I would think that it is likely that when you removed the first filter it allowed the second filter to partially drain thru the open fitting.

G-man, Thanks for the info, after PoTreeBoy's response i had the same thought as yours. I was just surprised at filtes being piped in parallel.

It is very common on larger equipment that, rather than use a filter twice the size, just use two smaller filters in parallel
