I agree as it sounds as if hyd oil was contaminated with water. I suggest to check trans case vent to be sure it's not clogged. One could test old hyd ooil by placing a small amount in a pan then heating to determine if heated oil emitted a crackling sound.

Normally hyd pump's don't just suddenly bite the dust! I suggest to perform good hyd diagnostic procedures before entertaining idea of replacing the hyd pump. I suggest checking hyd pressure with a gauge. I've also owned a ''11 M7040 since 2012. My guess is debris is in hyd relief valve...

Do you know if shuttle/reverser control is manual or relay controlled? My M7040 is manual via a cable controlled & some other model Kubota's are relay/electronically controlled.

My having owned both synchronized & hyd reverser type Kubota tractors I'll recommend hydraulic shuttle over synchronized shuttle. Hydraulic shuttle uses hyd reverser clutch instead of a dry traction clutch to control tractor fwd/rev motion. The Sync reverser om ,y Kubota M4900 failed @ 1500 hrs...

That type grease sounds similar to Corn head grease which is what I use in my cutter gearboxes.

Check to be sure trans case breather hole isn't clogged. I've read where trans oil can be drained into a container then very carefully heated to get moisture in oil to evaporate, then reinstall oil. I realize draining oil in sub freezing temp isn't a very good option!!:(
