I had a Kohler engine on a riding mower that was doing what you described. I finally found that the flywheel key had sheared and caused the engine to get out of time. It was a simple fix then (replaced key). Why it had sheared in the first place is beyond me. It ran great for years after that.

My MX5200 just came back from the dealer yesterday on the recall. They said the parts are some gaskets and "o" rings needed when splitting the tractor apart to check bolt torque.

That is a good idea you have there. I really liked the L3901 I'm trading, just have ran into some situations where I needed a little more tractor. This new one should cover all my current and future needs now.
