I know you say the starter is new, is that new like EBay new or Kubota dealer new? It has all the signs of a bad starter or a locked up engine.
Pull the glow plugs or injectors out and see if you can spin the motor freely.

So, symptoms don't change if I go directly from +ve battery to starter post with jumper cable. I did loosen, clean and refasten negative terminal frame connection. Engine is turning but very slowly. It is not a dealer starter - ebay starter, but it sounds like it's trying to do it's thing. Not the best location for visual inspection (it is in an unlit small shed) but I did my best with flashlight tracing the harness. I cannot see anything that looks like mice chewing etc. Started fine in Oct just before I stored it.

Stupid question - would these temps / oil viscosity lead to difficulties turning over? I don't think so but at the end of my rope with ideas.

thanks for all the input

What kind of jumper? from the pos post on the battery to WHAT post on the starter?

Is the solenoid on the starter or remote?

Positive on battery to positive post on solenoid (integral to starter) using car jumper cables. All this really did was bypass the +ve cable on tractor from battery to +ve post on solenoid /starter.

So would this indicate a bad -ve ground somewhere?

You need to pull the glow plugs out and see it will free spin, if it does you have a bad starter!

What did you use to trigger the starter? The ignition key?

The jumper from the Pos post of the battery is to go to the TRIGGER post on the solenoid. The small wire.......all you need is a small wire, not a jumper cable. This is bypassing the entire wire harness/ignition system.

To give you some perspective-

With a good battery and a good starter, you should be able to put the tractor in gear and use the starter motor to drive the tractor out of your shed. I don't recommend that but that's how much torque that little starter motor will put out.

Try it with the correct jumper this time.

Snow finally GONE, I was able to pull it out of the shed, put on a small trailer and get it into my garage to work on it.

Here is where I'm at:
1. If i pull glowplugs it turns over fine and fast. Engine is not binding.
2. There was some fraying in the small black wire attached to the +ve solenoid post. I trimmed it back and put on a fresh post attachment.
3. Now, with either jumping +ve post to trigger OR key starting now the engine turns over but still too slowly to start, however a little faster than before.

Looks like the brand new starter is bad??
