overrun clutch

I have a M7060 with a Wallenstein PTO 10 inch chipper. The Chipper rotor weighs 400 pounds, my question is should I put a overrun clutch on the PTO shaft to protect the PTO shaft brake while the rotor winds down. It seems to me that's a lot strain on that brake.

I was taught with any implement that has significant inertia (rotary cutters, old style square balers with flywheels, chippers, etc.) procedure for a normal (non-emergency) PTO stop on a tractor with PTO brake and built in over run is:
  • Idle the engine to lowest RPM
  • Wait for the implement/PTO shaft to wind down.
  • Disengage the PTO.

That minimizes the wear on the PTO brake. I suppose an external over run clutch would further reduce the load on the PTO brake. 🤷‍♂️

I’m interested to hear the thoughts of others.

I'm surprised it doesn't have a built-in ORC. If you disengage the PTO does the shaft still spin? If the PTO shaft does not spin but the rotor does as it slows down it has a built-in ORC.

I didn't see anywhere on their website or in the owners manual if this unit has one or not, I would think for the money and size that it should.

I would.

Of course you should always return engine speed to idle before disengaging PTO. Still, that's a lot of inertial energy.

Similar model Kubota tractors of 7060 vintage have a known weak PTO brake. Subsequent models have a more robust assembly.

I have ran a bat wing mower's for thousand's of hours and always engaged and disengaged the PTO at idle and I have yet to hurt a PTO brake on any tractor. Have run several tractors over ten thousand hours and never replaced a PTO clutch or brake in one. If you idle down and disengage the chipper I sure don't think you are going to damage the PTO brake.
