Hi Skeets I have both, it all depends on the snow conditions for both. The atv with tracks is ideal if you have the room in the bush to manuver it around the trees, it will go over a lot of snow but it's slow going. The sleds are much faster and will manuver a lot better, they'er lighter and they start better and also get better fuel mileage. As for realiability my sled has 6000 miles on it used mostly on trails (bush)in Northern Ontario and has never let me down. ATV's don't do well in snow over 2 feet even with large tires. So if I was going to buy new I'd go with a Honda Rincon (automatic trans and efi)with tracks. Hope this was helpful Barry.
Skeets, when you say sled, what do you mean? I doubt that you mean a snowmobile- we don't get that kind of snow on the eastern seaboard, and you can't use one all year long. Or, are you referring to getting around only in the winter?
An atv is an awesome tool, and so is a utv. Depends a lot on how much have have to spend.

I own an atv....I really think snowmobiling is a thing of the past in many areas. The next big purchase I'd make would be a Polaris Ranger. I know 4 or 5 folks who have them. They go anywhere and haul a lot. Try one out before you buy.

Distances, terrain, obstacles and how tight the conditions are all need to be figured in. What are you mainly wanting to do with it? As posted above if you are running in a foot or less of snow thew ATV would be the way to go, 4 wheelers ar being replaced twith the side by side UTV now days. I have a neighbor with a Polaris Razor with a track kit on it and he loves it year round, don't know that you will want to go 90 mph though!
I myself personally am a Honda man, I do not like to depend on any machine that is belt driven like every make out there other than Honda, "I know they have been proven" but it is just my preference.
But since this is a Kubota Board you need an RTV!

Chasing a rabbit, I am in your camp! I have a showroom-condition Honda TRX300, no bells, whistles, or belts. I have the exact same one, a 1998 model trx 300. I also have/ had 2 Dodge cummins. I laugh when I read your sig, our yards have the same stuff.
I never leisure ride my Honda, it is purely a work horse pulling pickup box trailers, snow plowing or herding cattle. Just wish I had a bit bigger one some days, not for the power, the little 300 pulls whatever I can hang behind it, but it has so much power it falls short in the weight and braking capability when puling heavy loaded trailers even with my 275lb carcass on it.

I was a little leery of belts too, but our 1990 Mules still has the original belt and it's had a lot of use.
I bought the honda side by side (Big Red) and I love it. No damn belts, it has a real 3 speed automatic transmission with a torque converter. Had it since 2010 and it has not had any issue at all, perfect service and we use the hell out of it. Had 800lbs of corn in the back of it, and went up ever hill on my place.

You may also want to look into AATV (amphibious all terrain vehicles) also known as six wheelers. There are a few brands (Max, Argo). They come in 2 seater and 4 seater versions. Most have no real suspension but use low pressure tires for suspension. They are fun and can go most everywhere even across water. They are not real fast but can pull a good amount.

For the thousands of dollars they want for a side by side UTV I'd rather spend a few hundred bucks and buy a 4x4 Ford Ranger or Chey S-10. $20,000 is a bit much for a play toy.

No doubt they are expensive, but my Rhino will go places a small pickup won't get close to in our woods. I used small pickups for years and still needed a UTV.
I agree. I built an offroad trailer specifically for my ATV. I can take the two to places that a truck wouldn't even consider. Plus, the ATV is geared much lower than the truck, even in low range. While a small truck will work, it will not take the place of an ATV or UTV.
Where is Skeets? He didn't clarify what he wants to do.
hodge, Im here in the coal country in SW Pa and yes around here the quad is king no doubts, that being said I do cross the border into the GWN and my old truck wont go some places I want and I am reallllllllly leery about a truck on the ice,,lol,, I that's why I asked, I k now we have guys and gals in here from all over the GWN as well as out west where they really have snow.
I'm still at a loss for what a sled is? I mean I had one when I was a kid we went sailing down a hill on. It was made by Radio Flyer.
I'm still confused, too. A sled, as in pulled by dogs or a horse, sled as in slang for a snowmobile, or some other meaning? Please, Skeets. Inquiring minds want to know.

"Sled" is the term used by a lot for snow mobiles, around my area you never hear the words snow mobile they are all sleds, same with Minnesota,South Dakota and Montana..
