Not sure if it is charging or not. If I allow it to run for a while, it will crank up (usually after shooting some starting fluid...) however, if I try to crank it after its been off for more than an hour or so, I must use the charger to jump it. The instructions I was told on how to start it was, turn the key on, turn the glow plug/starter switch counter clockwise and hold for 30/60 seconds then turn clockwise to crank. After it cranks, he told me to turn the key off and he actually took the key out of the ignition and handed it to me. If you leave the key turned on, the red light stays on (I don't know what this light is for) but once you turn the key off, the light turns off. He instructed me to push the throttle off to turn it off. This just doesn't seem legit to me. Is this correct and what it the purpose of the red light? How can I test to see if the system is charging and could I possibly just need a new battery? Thanks again!

That little light on the dash panel is the oil pressure light!
Look into installing a new oil pressure switch if the light does not go out when your running with a cleaned filter and the proper oil fill level. If this don't solve it, bigger problems will be ahead if you have a pump that is not making good oil pressure. Removing the key to shut off the light isn't going to make it right. I would not ignore this. In fact, I would NOT even run it until you know what the problem is with the oil pressure.
If the temperature is below 32F, try pulling that decompression lever behind the steering wheel instead of spraying. Once you get the engine rpm's up when cranking it over and your firing a little, try pushing that back in slowly while still cranking. I've read that you don't want to pull this lever to shut down, so yes cutting the fuel by pushing the throttle full ahead against the idle spring is the right way to shut down.
As far as your glow plugs, try counting off that 30+ seconds once you see the indicator coil glowing orange. I'll admit, it is easier to see the "glow" if you look in the round window hole before you get into the seat. I've found that setting the park brake, shifting to neutral, then standing on the right side is the way to start my B6000e when it's been sitting.
Try charging up or replacing an old battery before you get too concerned about the health of the charging circuit. Removing the key while running could prevent you from recharging the battery, and the drain of starting will eventually draw down that battery to dead.
Take a look at the AUX LIGHTING post on testing the charge circuit, I was stumped on that issue a little while back.

Well, you answered my next question I think. The decompression handle... While I don't have the lever behind the steering wheel, the 2 fittings and the connection shaft is on the top of the valve cover. I was gonna ask what that was for next. The rear mount (I'm callin it a mount as I'm not sure the exact term for it but am talking about the 2 things mounted on top of the valve cover that I suspect is the "decompression valves")was extremely loose when I got it. I tightened it and now it leaks oil a little. I'll try using this the next time I try to crank it. Do I open this while cranking and let go once it cranks? I don't have a glow plug indicator as it is missing. The stainless bezel is still there on the dash but no bulb. There is a really bad oil leak on the bottom (haven't tracked it down yet to know where it is exacly) so my oil level may be low. I'll leave the key on from now on though.where is the oil pressure switch located? Also, where is the oil filter? Thanks!
The bulb your looking for is a coil inside that stainless bezel on the dash. Lean over the seat and look right in at it. You may be able to light a cigg on it once you get the pluggs warmed up!!!!
I believe the oil pressure sending unit is mounted in behind the fuel pump. If your looking at the left (air cleaner side) of the engine, its on right end of the block. At least this is were I remember it to be on my B6000E.

Is it wrong that I have actually used the hot wires from the glow plug on the dash panel to light a cigarette with? A Marlboro fits perfectly inside and it works!
I think it would be wrong if you weren't resourceful (or crazy) enough to try it. See a hot glowy thing, stick something in it

I'd just like to add that the glow plug indicator can be extremely difficult to see glowing if the tractor is in a brightly lit area! Find out why that oil pressure light stays on! get that battery tested! Don't use ether! I've heard stories about decomps sticking but haven't had any first hand experience! I don't use it and my tractor has always started just preheating even as cold as 0 degrees F.

The pictures of the cheap little pressure switch are posted on this thread, message dated 2/14. That little switch will cost you less than a good gage and fittings, that is unless you happen to have a spare gage layin around on the bench...
