We abused our bodies when we were younger and now it’s telling us that we need to “slow the roll” as my wife tells me!
Yes, I wake up every morning with more aches and pains but I just can’t stop! Sometimes it’s just better to get up and get it done, just push yourself past the pain. Like we used to say in the Marines,
“ just suck it off and get it done “ but at 72 years old I think it’s not time for slow down yet! Both parents are still with us, at 97! So if I play the cards right, I should have a good many years ahead of me. If the Lord is willing.

I put the grapple and my weight/work box on to start trimming the trees around the fields.
Since I only got the grapple last fall I'm not too proficient with it. I was moving a bunch of junk limbs and had a tough time grabbing everything right. It really s@cks when travelling and you hit the wrong button and loose your load. I got lots of time to practice.
Part way through my practice session my neighbor called and asked if I could help him load the deck to his new deer stand on his truck with the forks. I'll get back to my grappling tomorrow.

I completely understand this! And for that, I am truly grateful.

I like your garage setup. With the implements racks and everything in its place. Maybe one day when I get older, I’ll get my garage cleaned up and organized! At 72, I have some more time, maybe! I have gotten some inspiration from the posts that show how some have their garages clea and organized, I may just try to buckle down and start working on it. Thanks for the inspiration! You know I was thinking about doing that too. Probably not a big deal but sometimes you just need a horn, even if just to honk at the neighbor as you drive bye.
The real reason for starting this post was to ask for more advice. I was doing some research on how to easily adjust the 3 point hitch, when you need to adjust it to have one side high or lower than the other side. Now maybe I am wrong but it seems that a ratcheting side link would do it. But if I am wrong please correct me on this! If I am correct then if someone has installed one on their tractor, if possible, post a picture of it and where you purchased it? Your input would have very helpful information for possibly others who might be interested in the topic.

If you can find a leveling box with the right range of travel, they’re the next best thing to a hydraulic side link in my experience. Had one on the 9N I grew up running. Even as a kid, I could easily adjust it with one hand whether I was standing on the ground or still sitting in the seat where I had virtually no leverage.

An idea to help with the grapple. When gathering material like a pile for limbs, get everything loaded and pinched as tight as you can before you move the tractor from the pile. Then don't mess with the buttons until you want to dump the load. You can roll the grapple to a more level position to help keep gravity from letting some small stuff come out when you hit bumps. After a while you'll have the memory to know which button does what and you won't even think about it.

Cleaned out the creek, some of the fence line, and the entrances to the driveway and the barns. The excavator ripped the stuff out and the Kubota hauled it to the piles.

That's the disadvantage of having a nice big building that's always clean and tidy. Everything in it's place makes for more room, so folks know you'll take good care of things and you surly have room.

Just a little weed cleanup with the flail mower yesterday...the ground has been really dry here so I figured now is the time to knock the weeds down with no worries of mud.

Decided that I'm tired of paying $80+ a year for a PO Box, so I'm putting up a mailbox.

I have a corner of the lawn next to the driveway that never has grown grass worth a hoot, so scraping it down, backfilling with crushed stone and tamping to give the mail driver a place to pull off the road while tending my box.

Got it cut out, box-bladed smooth and starting to back fill when the tractor started steering funny. Right front flat, must've let it get too low and pinched the tube doing loader work. Being Labor Day, no place to get it fixed, so I guess I'll take the rest of the day off.

Much to my surprise, I was able to fix the tire myself. The sidewalls were not nearly as stiff as I expected and I was able to pop it off the bead and pull the tube out to patch it. Saved myself at least a day, probably two and $30 or more for the repair.

Pad is backfilled and compacted, after lunch I'll run up and borrow a neighbor's posthole digger and set the post.

Went up and fetched the Post Hole Digger.

Used to have one, sold it when I got out of the sheep biz. PHD's are a pain in the derriere when stored with an eye towards having to remount it. When they're just flopped on the ground because the owner has never mounted one and hasn't a clue (came as part of the tractor package in an estate sale) it becomes a HUGE pain, especially when one worn out old fart is doing it alone.

However, this ain't my first rodeo and with blocking, using an 8 foot 2x4 for a lever and a little sketchy maneuvering, I managed it. Think I'll do the guy a favor and make a stand for it when I return it. He has other toys I borrow from time to time and I like to keep him happy...

Will wax the roof and fenders with 303 and the hood with Ice Turtle wax tomorrow.

I got one on my used L 5030, I'm guessing it came from the factory that way?

It shows it in the manual too, and doesn't mention that it's an option, so I'm guessing it's standard equipment on my model ...

Rented soil screener and started working on slash piles. Very efficient at separating slash but slow. 5 day rental will not be enough for all my piles. What a dusty mess. Tractor covered with red dust inside and out, No water on site so she needs to sit like that until the next rain, poor girl. I'm feeling guilty.

Did a little mowing on the sewer line. Been trying to leave it be for the most part to let it recover from the county doing everything possible with bush hog on a CTL to make a mess of it on a muddy, muddy day a couple years ago. Before that, we had a pretty good variety of forbs and grasses with some sweet gum saplings we kept in check via mowing once or twice a year. Earlier this year the pseudo flat section on the east end was so thick with sweet gum I could hardly see anything else there and I’m not a fan of sweet gum thickets, so I mowed that area at about 2”. Too short for forbs but there were very few anyway and it worked to take out the sweet gum. That section is now 95% grass with a smattering of random forbs and zero sweet gum. Didn’t mow it today. Probably will after deer season.

Speaking of deer season, archery opens later this month. This is one of the primary areas we hunt. Mowed the sections around the deer stands and the west end. Most was mowed last fall. A little of it hadn’t been mowed since the gov’t CTL spent the day doing donuts and figure 8’s all over it. I mowed this, but might could have skipped it. Short enough to easily see a standing deer. A deer laying down, whether voluntarily or involuntary, would be a bit more challenging so took it down to 8”.

This is also adjacent to one of the permanent elevated box stands. Sweet gums a wee bit high and thick to be hunting white tails.

Much better. Still doesn’t look like a lawn. Forest Service instructed for these areas where we want to encourage a mix of grasses and forbs but no trees, mow at 8”; areas where we want grass only, mow at less than 8”. They’re supposed to know more about this stuff than me, so I’m interested to see how it works out over a few years.

After that, since I was already in the same general area, visited this stump from a tree that fell away from one of the trails but encroached on the trail via the root ball. Cut the tree loose a while back when I drove by on the Mule and happened to have a saw with me. Was a bit curious if the Piranha tooth bar would cut enough roots to get it out. It came out after about fifteen minutes of fiddling with it. Didn’t need to move it far; just off the trail. A bucket of dirt to fill the hole finished the job.
