I just got my L3800 delivered today. I have about 3.5 acres of heavy woods in my yard that I need to clear - starting with one acre for garden & orchard...what are your recommendations for a stump grinder (and do you have a link?) Some trees are up to 2 feet diameter.

Thanks!

If you are planning on using your Tractor for Ground Prep, ie: Plowing, Tilling, Discs etc: Grinding will do no good, those trees have to come completely out, stumps and root balls.. I am doing the same to 1 acre of mine this summer, I hired a guy with a Trackhoe to pull the trees and stumps... Once that is done then I will start leveling and working that acre into an actual garden...

Bumping this since I'm thinking about a stump grinder also for my L3800hst .

Anyone think there to rough on the tractor . Watching videos they don't seem that enough .

I have found a shaver sc-25 used that mite be a buy .
Anyone think I will have problems with the L3800hst . If I buy the grinder it will be for my use and maybe so I could make a dime on the side also . Another reason I would like to use the L3800 it would be easier to get in yards than my m7040 and less yard damage .

I'm kinda biased about buying a stump grinder at 3-5 grand versus renting one for a long weekend or a week to do what needs to be done. Its one of those items yeah its nice to own but once the job is done you wont need it anymore. And as far as grinding on the side you're limited to the types of jobs you can take on due to tractor access.

Ya I have 1000's of stumps and still 1000's of trees to make stumps . On 500 acres .

And ya as a side job that's why I was thinking the l3800 I could pretty much get it anywhere I believe . Plus with a grapple I mite could get whole tree removable or clean up plus grinding since I have dump trailers and the tractor . I just like to make a dollar anyway I can .

Just am worried a 3 pt grinder mite be to taxing on the L3800hst . Don't know ??

Welp then its pretty justifiable to buy one then. As far as wear and tear on a tractor I don't know anybody who owns one to give you an answer. The tree guys I know own Vermeer grinders.

While the backhoe is a lot more scratch, I think it is worth it in the long run (~3-4 more than Eric mentioned)?

Would love to have a backhoe for the L3800 because I have tons of things I could do with one of those also . But cost is the problem there . And I haven't run across a good deal on one used .
Like I mite have on the stump grinder .

There are "vertical" stump grinders that seem like they would remove more of the stump and deeper. See this link for an example.

I saw somewhere on the net one that looked heavy duty and would cut out a very large stump. Sort of looked like a giant drill/pencil sharpener thing.

Can't recall the brand but I think it was Italian origin.

A hoe works fine on small trees and scrubs. But anything with any hefty root zone to it a compact backhoe wont dig it out. Most land clearing companies use a bulldozer or heavy excavator for pushing tree and roots over.
