I found a pack of mater seeds, and by pack, I mean an old folded up envelope being used as a page marker in an old cook book, so I have no idea what they might be, or how old. Yes I know it is the beginning of March, and it will be another 6 weeks at least before I can put anything in the ground. And I was going to stick these in and try them, but wondering when do you guys from up here in the coal country start your stuff . I normally start things way to early and wind up with ,well long plants, since the GH is long gone I stick them out there.

Here in southern Ontario I consider June 1st to be THE 'plant anything' date, then work backwards based on plant type. Now IF you have a Bridal's wreath Spirea bush, AFTER it blooms for 3 days you can plant 'tenders' ( beans, toms, etc......) as no chance of frost.
Since you're south of me I suspect you'll be 2 weeks ahead of me ?
My guess is 1st or 2nd week of April. Split the package into 2, plant 1/2 1st week, rest 2nd week.
Growing time depends a lot on light and heat, keep light CLOSE to seedings to prevent 'spindly stems'.

Just a thought, but since you don't recognize the seeds, just in case, plant them out of sight from law enforcement...;):giggle:

I would start them in pots indoors now.

Maters, eggplant, and peppers first week in April. Usually danger of frost until June 1 here. Garlic went in last October.

Good day.

We normally start our tomatoes end March / early April and we start them inside in our …not sure what it is called…but it’s like a very small bio dome and is has a heat mat under it and grow lights…then about two weeks later they go out to the greenhouse until we are ready plant (May if it’s warm spring).

Timing is a gamble…to early and you grow out of space if it’s too cold to put them out…too late and seems like takes for forever to get the pick fruit.

I’d recommend plant a few early, a few 2 weeks later and a few more after than…key point I would stagger so if you put something outside early and lose it you have more coming behind it. YMMV.

N.Y,
Here's my last year putting them out video. Was warm and end of May. I started the tomatoes early and they were tall but I always bury most of the plant anyway. Spinach will go in as soon as the ground is thawed

We start our 6 weeks before putting into garden.

About 1/2 way through we transplant and stress the plants so that when they hit the 6 weeks age and ready to go outside they are not too spindly.

We do about 125 plants per year and if the day is nice we like to put them outside. Also we use grow lights and fans during daylight hours to strengthen the stems. The fans make a big difference on our starters.
