My neighbour has a 'Split-fire' and it's GREAT ! I help him 2-3 times a year. Once you get into the rhythm amazing how much firewood you can make. I handle the lever, due to ny missing 2 lower discs, so he lifts the wood. Best to have 3 people...loader, leverguy, stacker.

I considered a PTO mount and went stand alone. Now that I have a UTV I can easily haul my chainsaws, have a field work bench, and tow my splitter around and get to the back 40 quickly.

Years ago I spit a lot of wood with a 3020 JD tractor and a three point splitter. That tractor had plenty of hyd flow so you didn't need a PTO pump. It worked very well. Been using stand alone mostly home made splitters now for well over thirty years and wouldn't go back to three point. Summer is coming you should be able to pickup a lightly used splitter on a sale or market place for well under thousand dollars. Summer is the time to buy splitters and snow blowers not now. Just a side story a older gentlemen I used to rent some farm ground from had kept a $150,000 dollar tractor around after he retired to push snow and split fire wood with a three point splitter and then he would give the wood away. He didn't burn wood.
The question that first needs to be asked is: What works best for your process?
I like as few engines to maintain as necessary, therefore like the idea of an 11GPM 2-stage PTO pump (really fast) on a 23HP BX.
I also am at a fabrication shop so while I "can" (and do) design and build my own equipment, doing so for one of something rarely makes sense if someone else makes them in volume, meaning I "could" design my own but with a very competitive splitter market it doesn't make sense to do so, especially since they have years of experience making a better product than their competition.
Looking at the cost of a PTO splitter verses a self-powered, I'm inclined to go self-powered. The convenience factor other members talk about makes it that much better.
For you that may be different, and it's your use that matters.

How much wood do you need to split and is it every year ?
Around here you can rent a splitter for less than $200 so on a long weekend, IF you're setup properly, 3 guys can split several BUSH cords of wood.
It might be an option ?

I have to feed a stove in the house, greenhouse, workshop and the maple evaporator. A good amount.

OK, so really 'HIGH' volume of splits.You're doing it for 'business' not a 'hobby'. Standalone will be faster, cheaper and more versatile.

I'm in the market for a log splitter. Powerhorse 3-Pt. Horizontal/Vertical Log Splitter The price is good IMW(allets)O. I have a BX23S with 6.6GPM. So I'm sure the cycle time wont be ideal. But otherwise. Has anyone ever used one? Thanks

I see nothing in the pumps shown in the link that indicates a pto pump' other than the yellow one which is exactly the type I have and single stage. All the others including the one highlighted are high speed pumps that go with a gas engine. I contacted Prince at the time and nothing was available. If they had a two-speed pump it would likely cost more than a complete standalone splitter in our loonies.See: @GreensvilleJay Post #6
