PTO shear bolt connection / welded

I am looking at a used Bush Hog SQ600. The guy with it for sale has been very honest and forthcoming about its condition. He sent me several pictures of the shear bolt coupler where it attaches to the gearbox and the previous owner welded it.

It looks like I could grind it right back off and the shear bolt is still installed. Am I looking at these pictures wrong? Why would someone weld it like that?

The price is pretty decent for the entire bush hog that is in good shape. Worst case, I could just replace that end of the coupler correct?

Is this not the shear bolt? Yoke may have been cracked, and poorly repaired. Who knows. Get seller to knock off $300 and buy a new PTO shaft.

Exactly. I was thinking the guy got tired of replacing the shear bolt so he welded it. I didn’t consider that the actual flange may be cracked or busted. Maybe he threw a grade 8 bolt in there and instead of the gearbox letting go, the flange did?

Ive got him down to his bottom dollar on price. Looks like I could replace the entire flange end for 100 ish.

He has sent me a current video of the bushog running from slow speed to full speed today; so the gearbox works at least. Sounded good.

yes, shear bolt is on the bottom of picture #4. SAME setup as my tiller has.

Yoke broke, I don't know why....could be fatigue, lack of grease, Monday 10AM ?

Once you know make of PTO shaft, should be able to buy just the 'yoke' pieces.

I know my shear bolts work ,if tiller finds a big softball sized stone and it get trapper, SNAP.. bolt breaks
Since my tiller is Metric (Italy) maybe 8mm or 9mm, 1/4" bolts are loose in the hole, 5/16 is better but still has 'wiggle' room. Found I don't snap them when I add flat washers under head of bolt and before nut.

That is a shear bolt coupling, or I should say it was before the weld.

That shear bolt coupling is not an easy or cheap one to get in a new PTO shaft.
You can buy just the end, the cheapest I've found is a couple hundred for that style.

Check the Bare Co website. They have them.

There is an illustrated parts list at Messicks and has a few PTO drive shafts and a couple that show the offset shear pin. One seems to be obsolete but here is the other one that shows the part you may need. But it is ~$350 so I think I would just replace the whole shaft and add a slip clutch

And if you want a heavy duty cutter that is not that style. Do some research to be sure it meets your needs

Agri supply has them in #4 and #5 for $80ish and $100ish respectively.
