I have an old L1500 that is having trouble keeping the battery charged. Had the alternator checked and it's working normally. The voltage regulator, though, is my problem. The business I took it to said if I could get the parts number off of it he would be able to repair it. The info on top of the regulator housing is mostly missing due to the fact that when I bought the tractor back in the mid 90's, prior to my purchase there had been a fire at the steering wheel/dash area and the housing of the regulator is charred. Does anyone that has a 70's - 80's L1500 have any information that you could pass on to me. I've tried to search for replacements, but all I find are 6 prong regulators, and mine is a 3 prong regulator. Thanks for any info.

picture would really help !
Typically ...3 prong will be 2 AC wires(blue) from 'alternator', 1 wire ( red ) to battery, and case MUST be grounded to -1ve of battery, and firmly mounted to metal , used as heatsink. 3 inline tabs, outer go to alternaor, center one is +12v to battery.
These 3 prong rectifier/regulators are 'variations of a theme' of the B&S patent in the '70s. Simple and reliable, just be SURE to fuse for 15 amps. Guts are 2 diodes, 2 resistors, an SCR and a zener. Used to depot and rebuild them for fun 3 decades ago adding a 'charging LED' to them.

The part number for the L1500 Regulator is 15221-6460-1,
which is no help other than to confirm that the L175 Regulator is the same.
That part number is 15221-64600 and is available from Messicks, Coleman and
probably your local dealer as well.

FYI, my L1500 has a six (6) wire regulator.

but his last line is NOT 6 prong, needs 3 prong regulator.

If the OEM was 6, then someone has modified the wiring for 3......
this is where a picture or two would help !
