Woke up to another 2" of heavy wet snow. With the snow being packed and hard as ice under it...the L2501 didn't want anything to do with it. Just no traction...might have to get some cheapo chains. I'm sure the R14 are better for this than the R4s I have. But after some effort I did manage to get it to plow...the trick was to let some of that wet snow roll under the plow so the tires had something to bite and I spent a good while really scraping the driveway down to almost gravel again now I have more traction. But man I didn't think it would be this difficult. My Polaris Ranger had no issues with this stuff but it had pretty gnarly kobbies on it.

It has never really snowed this much this early before. Last year we went almost to Jan without snow on the ground. The ground here is still soft so its like melting the snow and freezing it creating this thick layer of hard pack and ice. It's really slick. Usually when I go plow, the ground has frozen and it's much easier but its been a nightmare. It's not just me, others are experiencing the same thing.

It's not that the tractor CANT do it, I just have to rethink my strategy on plowing with it. I really feel like the large pads on the plow are kinda screwing me too. They are good in the fact that they kinda stop it from digging into the lawn but I also can't scrap down much either, even the tilting the blade forward just changes the whole geometry of it, instead of digging in, it kinda just scrapes on top of the snow. I might try to take the pads off and see how it goes. I'm going to apologize it my lawn before hand though 😅

I guess on the bright side....I have more seat time. I'm getting really good at operating the loader controls using multiple functions at once. I can pretty much raise and lower the boom while keeping the plow or bucket level and I only have 6 hours of seat time!
A little advice if you are open to it. If you do buy chains, buy a good set that will last the life of your ownership of this tractor. When you say cheapo chains, you get what you pay for. Price is forgotten long after quality is remembered.

I sold diamond studded snow chains that were about $900, I should have kept them but since I have polished garage floor it would have ruined the floor. For now I'm just going to keep plowing without chains and see how it goes. Luckily where I plow it's completely flat so I'll probably manage without them.

Then I guess you didn't need to mention getting "some cheapo chains". Ignore my previous post.

I agree with you, I probably will get chains again at some point. Maybe ones that are easier to put on but I'll have to make some sort of rubber pad in the garage or something to protect the floor. But yeah I should have kept the chains, that was a mistake on my part. I really didn't think I need them. It's tough because I also sometimes need to plow on top of the grass and I know the chains would probably tear the crap out of the lawn.

I guess i'll find out when I get a huge dumping of snow how it performs.

Added armrests to my LX2610SU. Just happened to see them on Messicks while looking for something else. Didn’t know they made them for my seat.

Are your pads adjustable? I have a StIHL power gravel mover for getting stones back into the driveway without damaging the lawn, but it's best to not put gravel into the lawn...
Yes the pads are adjustable but they are already set where I'd normally put them. I usually take them off when the ground freezes. They are like 3 times the size of the ones there were on my side by side plow but as low as they are, they just prevent the plow from really scraping.

It's inevitable. Even when I had the side by side, I always had significant amount of stones in the lawn after plowing season. I'm limited to where I can put the snow so I spend every spring getting blisters raking my 500ft drive way up and down. Good exercise I guess lol. But in a way I think the tractor may actually be better because I don't need to push the snow further. I can just make one big snow bank and dump it over. The side by side just builds up and by the end of the season there less room in the drive way.

Yes I'm gonna have work to do this spring. I'm a new tractor operator so I'm gonna make mistakes and rest things up a little but that's ok.

You should see other people's drive ways who get plowed out with a pick up. Nothing like seeing mounds of sod piled up. I am not where close to that level of damage!!!!

The damage I caused is minor in comparison and plus it's another excuse to use the tractor 😁

A power broom would be awesome to own. I might have to look into that.

Yeah, that is kind of the nature of the job to some degree...at least you're able to minimize it. It sounds like you're doing quite well despite being new at it, plus having fun, both are great attributes.

Regarding the power broom, obviously some rocks will embed and kill the grass over winter, aside from that the paddles do a reasonable job with a lot less damage than a rake in my experience, and although it's faster and much less effort than a rake it's not "effort free."

I keep an old sheet of plywood on the floor at the entrance. Place a couple scraps over the apron when I pull the tractor in or out. The studded chains never touch the floor. The scraps on the apron are a pita but not as bad as having no chains.

Oh that's good. May have to use that on some folks today.
I kind of screwed that quote up so if you do use it on some folks today it is actually "Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten". Aldo Gucci 1938

Whichever order you choose, it's certainly a true statement. I have a Canoga concrete mixer and there's a plaque on the mixer with a variation of that quote, and the quote is repeated in the owner's manual.

Heavy Rubber stall mats will let you drive on the concrete floor and not damage it.

The boy is with his grandparents all week and took two days off work to get stuff done around the house. I helped the wife get all the Christmas decor out and set up Saturday as my tax to be outside the next three days. I spent Sunday-Tuesday stacking logs into a neater area with the tractor, building a wood shed, trimming trees, running them all through the chipper, and generally just piddled outside, with no particular time to be done. It was FANTASTIC! I'll get some pics uploaded of the tractor work!

Didn't get any action shots of the tractor but it was used to move all the logs and then fill the wood shed with split wood from a huge pile my brother and I processed last year.

Long day, just rolled in, I'll unload the trailer in the morning. Last paid job for the SVL this year. I probably put over 9 hours of seat time in the cab today.

Couple years ago I got 6 yards of drive way mix tailgated...where does it all go? Haha.
