I'll bet my BX23s that nobody can tell the difference between the $7.50 a pound bird and a 99cent one ,once you toss on the homemade gravy, cranberries and a smidgen of homemade stuffing !
Especially if your daughter-in-law over cooks it every Thanksgiving

We had Thanksgiving dinner at #3 Son's place. They did the peanut oil fried version following a marinade. It was one of the best-tasting turkeys we've had a was really moist.

Chim, before my wife passed, I would do a deep fried turkey for Thanksgiving and Xmas in veggie oil, some of her grand kids were allergic to peanuts. I did a dry bring and injected a brine in to the meat and let it set over night in the fridge. Skin always came out crispy and the meat white tender and moist cant say about the dark meat cause I dont like it. And it is a lot quicker than in the oven too, though there is a real fire hazard involved :)

When I worked at the cannery, they did deep fried turkeys for Thanksgiving (or maybe it was Christmas, I don't recall) and one of the more bone-headed employees casually dropped a frozen, frosty bird into a pot full of hot oil.

The results involved a fire extinguisher, banishment to the parking lot and a lot of "WTF were you thinking" comments.

The talk of deep-frying turkeys reminded me of this true story:

Years ago, we’d have a get together on New Year’s Day at my shop for our RC airplane club.

A buddy (and prankster, too) who rented storage from me was an expert with the deep-frying process and would deep fry the turkeys for us that day. The turkeys were perfect and always a big hit with the crowd.

When we were outside, one of the club members who could not get over how great the turkey tasted asked me what Ed (the cook) injected the turkeys with to get them so tender. I seized the opportunity to tell him he’d be better off to ask Ed and have him explain his recipe. I quickly disappeared back into the shop to let Ed in on the prank.

When the club member came back into the shop, I watched him corner Ed and inquire about his secret “sauce”. Ed kept a straight face while he was pestered for the reveal. Ed finally said, “Well, you know David’s brother is a veterinarian in Wisconsin. See that large syringe there? There’s a perfect meat tenderizer in one of the products that large animal vets use. Don’t spread this around but David got his brother to send us some outdated bull semen that they couldn’t use anymore for artificial insemination. Black Angus, in fact. That’s what was in that syringe we injected the turkeys with. "

This club member had a weak stomach and after a long pause he was turning pale, gagging and heading for the shop door!! Then he heard me laughing and saw Ed doubled over laughing …. and knew he had been pranked good. All these years later, he still laughs about using outdated bull semen for the best tasting deep-fried turkey ever!!
