L2900 - Independent PTO?

Good Morning!

Just reading through the Manuals for my machine, and I see that there was apparently an independent PTO option for the L2900. Mine is the DT-GST, so does that mean it automatically has an Independent PTO? If not, is there a way to physically check to see if that is on my machine?

Just trying to understand a little about what I do and don't have, and I don't know if there is an easy way to tell.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think a true independent PTO was not available with the Glideshift. Instead the GST gives what Kubota calls a live PTO, operates as below:

You have a conventional dry clutch at the engine. Then the power flow splits with part going to the PTO through an over-running clutch, that also serves as the in-out shift. The clutch must be disengaged to engage the PTO. The other power goes to traction through the GST, etc. The GST includes a hydraulic clutch that is used for gears 1-8, shuttle and neutral.

So, by using the shuttle and shifter, you can change gears and direction with the PTO under power. But, if you're moving, the tractor will stop when you press the clutch to engage the PTO. So it's not 100% independent, but it's much better than a transmission drive PTO. Also, the overrunning clutch prevents a heavy spinning load from driving the engine and tractor.

Thank you for the detailed response! I saw that it was an option on the tractor in the WSM, but I wasn't sure if that was only for a gear drive tractor or if it was something that was also possible on the GST.

Having had some old iron in the past, I can very much appreciate having an overrunning clutch and the ability to run an implement and stop the machine without having to stop both at the same time. (Still love me some Farmalls....)

Yes a independent PTO is only available in a DT.
A GST has A live PTO, it's better in my opinion.

With a GST, you need to get used to running it without using the clutch pedal.
All normal movement forward and reverse can be done without the clutch.
Also another thing that can be done is shift from any gear to any gear at anytime without using the clutch.

To run a PTO powered implement properly with a GST, use the clutch to stop all movement, engage the PTO let out the clutch to spin it up. then use the shuttle to start movement, and while moving use the gears accordingly to slow or speed up to the proper speed for the implement.
If you need to come to a stop, use the shuttle not the clutch.
Only use the clutch if you need to stop the PTO.

Running a snowblower with it is nice because you can slow down on the fly or speed up on the fly and change direction quickly and never stop PTO movement.

Sounds like I'll just need to reprogram my habits for driving this machine. It should shift a little nicer now that I have SUDT2 in it...

Drained about 12 gallons of mystery oil out of it last weekend.
