A skinny bucket seems like a good idea, but I have heard that they "plug up" easily in clay, so that might be a consideration.

I don't think it's the less weight so much as the closer distance between the sides, holding in the dirt.Yep, I agree.
However I have heard that the because the smaller buckets load has less mass, it is harder to "shake it out" thus more likely to have to be dug out by hand.
That's just what I "heard", I don't have any actually experience with it personally.
Kinda makes sense to me though.
