Do you offset the gap on piston oil ring?

I know suppose to put gaps away from middle expansion ring.but do you line up the gap of top and bottom oil ring.or do you offset then like two compression rings.

If I recall correctly, I was taught to place them ~120 degrees apart.

The "manual" would be the best bet to make sure, but if I were "alone on a desert island" The 120 degree thing would make the most sense to me.
