I had a customer a short time ago that took his two kids to a maine fair the gate price was $20. each and included rides.
He said I'm not going on rides.
And my kids will only ride a couple. So I drive 1 1/2 hrs and I'm not paying $60. To get in.
That's ridiculous. So she charged him $40. And he went in.
I'm not a huge fair person but was thinking of going to Lancaster NH fair Saturday, I checked the website it's $25. Per person admission. Rides included. I don't go on rides.
I just checked fryburg fair. Admission last yr was $12.
This year it's $15., but no rides included.

I would say be thankful you can even attend your fair. We wrote ours off here in Jackson, MS about 12 years ago when a certain group of people started to take it over making it no longer family friendly.

Few years after that all the good vendors stopped coming.

Then a few years ago they decided the good ole folks could no longer conceal carry.

Then last year, that same group of bad individuals started random shootings, looting cars, etc...

I cant tell you the last time I went you our fair,, back when I was much younger Allegheny County had a big fair. And it was closed down, because the county commissioners in Da Burgh ,though it gave Da Burgh a bad image as being to rural and to many farmers, and their dirty animals, were destroying the up and coming image they wanted to present.

I feel your pain.

Just last week, we took my wife's "Little Sister" (Big Brothers, Big Sisters) to a local fair.

$24 -Admission
$50 - Ride Tickets (for 50 tickets. Each ride was between 3-5 tickets per person)
$15 - Two games to win a stuffed animal
$7- One waffle Ice cream sandwich
$6 - one order of fries
$23 - two sausage sandwiches and an A-treat beverage
$25- temporary tattoo
$10- for 10 mins on some bouncy gym thing
$15 - for a funny trump hat (that was worth the $)

Total - I didn't add it up. It was worth it to bring a smile to that girls face.

However, we had her here a month ago and she had more fun on the quad and two of my toys...

We have a fair in a few weeks that my daughter will show/sale her steer. Next month is the fair her lambs will be shown/sold. If it wasn't for the livestock, we wouldn't be going.

I get to attend the fair without paying an additional parking fee. I drive up to the gate, blow the siren and someone opens the gate and I drive in and park the car. I even get a participation ribbon. Everyone loves the car and I let the little kids sit in the driver's seat. The parents take pictures of their kids behind the driver's wheel. Then we will wander around for an hour or so and go home. I've been doing it for mega years now, just using a different ambulance through the years. I am down to my last one.

My wife told me she and her sisters got rolls of free ticket to the fair as a youngster. Her father and his brothers owned a machine shop and they did all the repairs on any equipment when the fair was in town (which included all the rides). The man who brought the work to the machine shop made sure the kids had plenty of free rides. They would just peal off a roll of tickets for them.

We did that for about 12 years, showing lambs, steers, and turkeys. It was always a busy week.

$15 here, $10 for seniors and military. Concealed carry is ok. In the current state of affairs in this country I refuse to go anywhere that my 10mm isn’t accepted.

That's pretty much where I'm at these days. Gun free zones are me free zones.

Our fair entry is $10 for adults. $5 for kids, seniors and veterans. Rides are extra. It's not too bad because the "shows" are free. Magic, dance shows and such. They have a mounted rifleman demonstration too. The skills these guys and girls have to shoot from a galloping horse is incredible!

fairs are a gathering of, criminals in this area

they are the only folks who go

We (wife and I, brother, mom) do not attend, and Mom is head of the dav auxiliary, and should go. But she doesn't. Too much 'activity'.

but if you want weed or coke or crank, or you want to be beaten or killed over $20 in cash, it's the place to be.

last time I went, we had fun for the most part-except the fact that you could not go anywhere on the grounds without getting contact high. I didn't forget that. I don't like it, don't like the smell, don't want to be near it-thus I have never been back. Ain't a lot of crime in that area, just a lot of "poor" country folks (they can't be that poor if they're buying the stuff), and generally a good place to be--but I still haven't been back and it's been, gosh, 15 years?

Used to work at a kubota dealer that was adjacent to the fairgrounds, so every year at certain times I'd see this stuff happening-particularly after dark. Sometimes we'd work til midnight or so, typically end of the month trying to meet a sales or service goal. Couple times we had guys climbing the back fence trying to get into (steal, vandalize, ???) the equipment. "Fair-goers" as the police would say.

And I live a not terribly far from "the carnies"-a carnival ride business. As long as "they" stay on that side of the road, I'm fine. But I don't trust a single one of them. They've got a bunch of big trucks (rides, etc) and such lined up ready for the next event, their property is about 250 acres and a lot of that is just pasture. But when the carnies are in town, they live in their vehicles (usually cars, trucks, vans but sometimes they'll park an RV behind the neighbor's fenceline) for a few weeks, on that pasture, and there's 'stuff' that goes on obviously. We are starting that "few weeks" right now (typically labor day through the last week of Sept) and they are showing up. If the wind is just right, I don't go outside. Nobody does. And when I do, my head is on a swivel and I'm heavily prepared. Those folks is just plum weird.

and the prices that they charge for admission have tripled since I went, I think a ticket is $30 now. Gotta pay those carnies ya know, considering the lack of 'fair-goers'. Snowballs, they jack up the cost to enter, fewer people go, which reduces the overall income producers so they raise the cost and then even fewer people go. But the troublemakers certainly don't avoid. Even the cops avoid it now, fewer officers than ever I'm told.

I believe a lot of the social scum at carnivals and fairs are not necessarily from the area. It's a prime hunting ground.

We are haveing that problem comeing up with Sate Fair of Texas. We have a very clear law that LTC holders can carry on most all government owned property . The grounds & buildings are owned by the City of Dallas but the Fair is a pvt corp that leases the property so they think they can deny license holders this year . Our Attorney General sent the Fair & the City a cease/desist order 2 weeks ago and yesterday filed a suit to put an end to not following the law.
I haven't been in several years but the grounds are smack dab in the middle of a bad area, imho. I grew up Dallas going to our State Fair. When in school got free entrance and a bus token to get there and back home.
The local yokels have the East Tx Yamboree. So named for the sweet taters that used to be a major cash crop here in the 1930's and 40's

My sister and her husband have lived in the Dallas area for a very long time. Her husband was a Dallas Sheriff for a while. She taught at Baylor and SMU. I love the area. It's beautiful on the outskirts. Hot as hades in the summer!

Went to the Fair last night and the only thing that we say out of the ordinary were the old ladies dressing like teenagers trying to look younger, young kids hanging all over each other, and all the people having a great time. It was the 163rd year for the fair and even though I have only been going for a little over 50 years, it hasn't changed much over that time. Attendance was down for the first day by my observation because there were no crowds like we experienced in the past. Not sure if we will be going again this evening, it is up to the wife.

I have heard from quite a number of Texans that Houston and Dallas-and now Austin, are often not considered "texas" by traditional Texans...

This is true. He says it's like a southern Washington DC. Lots of newcomers that have brought less than ideal ideological ways.

Watching that show
Carnival Eats , they always show giant fairs in Texas with with crazy foods. Rattler Taco or some other southern influence food.
Watching the show it looks like a blast to attend.
