When doing a complete hydraulic oil and filter service on a TLB48 does the backhoe oil drain along with the rest of the tractor or does it have to be drained separately and if so how? When I bought the sudt2 and filters the parts manager told me that the 13.5 gallons of oil needed for the oil change included the backhoe. Guessing that if it does drain with the rest of it the boom, dipper and bucket all need to be in the tucked in position? Could not find any info on this and would appreciate any feedback!

I would not expect any oil to drain from the backhoe.

As suggested above, there is no separate drain for the BH.
A small amount of oil will be trapped in all cylinders/hoses, and that is simply not drainable.

Unless you manage to drain all the hydraulic fluid from the various cylinders, the old stuff will be circulated with the new stuff.

A way to do it is to detach the cylinder rod from the implement, capping off the hoses and adding new (temporary hoses) to the cylinder, then using low air pressure in one of the temp hoses to move the piston which forces out the fluid through the other hose. Then do it again with the other hose to get both sides of the piston.

It can be messy if you use too much air pressure and don't ensure the temp hoses aren't flopping around. I did it like this when rebuilding cylinders on my L35 so I didn't have to deal with oil in the shop.

The system will fill/prime itself once the engine is started and controls are moved - just move them slowly.

What I have done is park the hydraulic cylinders in the position where the rod is fully retracted into the cylinder. That way you have displaced as much oil as possible back into the reservoir/transmission case and now do your fluid change. You can do this with your front end loader as well. The only cylinders where this is not possible are the side to side cylinders and, for safety reasons, the dipper cylinder.

I believe unless you have some type of contamination, like water, in the system that this would be sufficient for a simple fluid change. There will be some fluid left in the cylinders but not enough to cause any concern.

If you do have sever contamination in the system then you would likely be better off going further and draining each cylinder and the lines.

Just my 2 cents, I hope this helps!!

I wouldn’t worry about draining the cylinders. Maintenance schedule accounts for some remaining oil. Don’t know about your L48, but my B20, B26 and M59 have multiple drain points for the hydraulic oil.

If you did have some water contamination it would require multiple drain, fill with new filters, use, repeat to flush systems.

Enjoy your L48. A great machine.

I have not looked for my L48 hyd. drain locations, but will check my WSM.
